  1. ACL Injury… • By: David Hughes

  2. Symptoms… • There are only a few symptoms of an ACL injury, but they are very obvious symptoms. One symptom of an ACL injury is when you walk or you move your knee and you feel or hear a popping sound around your knee. Another symptom if you pain around your knee this includes the back and outside of the knee. Also, swelling of the knee within a short amount of time after the injury and if it swells right after the injury then that usually means that it is a pretty serious injury. The last sign or symptom of an ACL injury is if your buckles or gives out and you only so much mobility form the leg that you injured your ACL on.

  3. Prevalence… • ACL injuries are pretty common and they mostly result from someone playing a sport. We hear a lot about ACL injuries today because people around us get these injuries and mainly because big name athletes just so happen to get an ACL injury. When one of these athletes injures their ACL you will hear the everything about the whole process (when their surgery is, how well their recovery is going, and when they are expected to play again). There has only been one study on how often or common ACL injuries are and that study showed that 1 in every 3,500 will injure their ACL, so that means that 95,000 people a year injure their ACL.

  4. Causes… • The causes of an ACL injury are obvious. When the knee joint is bent backwards, twisted, or bent side to side usually is the a cause of these injury. The main cause is when your foot is planted on the ground and your knee is hit by an opposing force and it does one of the actions I just talked about such being twisted. This injury can be caused just from walking and taking an awkward step that makes your knee go in a direction it usually doesn’t go in.

  5. Treatments… • The treatment process first begins by the doctor or who ever is treating you, will give you a medicine or some type of treatment to reduce the pain and swelling. Also, the doctor will help you regain normal mobility of the joint. After the doctor reduces the pain and gets your mobility back then the doctor will talk about weather or not surgery is going to be needed and this decision will have to be agreed on by you and the doctor. Once this process is done then the rehabilitation process starts and this process can take up to months. The rehabilitation process consists of many visits back to the doctor, so they can make sure that you are healing correctly and that the process is moving forward. Lastly, this injury takes a while to recover from.

  6. Interesting Facts… • One interesting fact is as you get older than the age of 40 the ACL becomes more likely to tare. • In the NFL, ACL injuries account for as much as 2% of all injuries in the league. • Women are any where from 2 to 10 times more likely to experience an ACL injury than a male.

  7. Interesting Fact… • On December 24th, 2011 Adrian Peterson tore his ACL in game against the Redskins. One season later Adrian came back rushed for 1,812 yards in 14 games. He is leading the league in rushing yards and is probably the leading candidate for the league MVP. Peterson is 293 yards away from tying the single season rush yards record set by Eric Dickerson.
