The spiral galaxy M 81: a colour-coded composite of radio observations of atomic hydrogen (blue) made with the Very Large Array (VLA) and infrared observations made with the SPITZER Space Telescope (green and red). Scientists at MPIA use data like these to study the influence of the large-scale distribution of interstellar matter on the star formation process.
