  6. Education Texas Education Agency (TEA) is in charge of the funds provided for public education by the federal government

  7. Taxes – Funding for Education • Property taxes gathered in each school district are used to pay for education • Bonds – loans used to build, remodel, or modernize schools

  8. Central Government Central government pays for certain programs such as nutrition and special education

  9. Current Constitution (1876) • We are currently using the Constitution of 1876 • 6th Constitution since Texas was governed by Mexico

  12. Reconstruction Amendments • 13th Amendment – abolished slavery. • 14th Amendment - granted citizenship to people born or naturalized in the United States. • 15th Amendment – granted all men the right to vote.

  13. Reconstruction • Black Codes – laws that defined rights of freed African Americans. The laws separated African Americans and whites in jobs, public transportation, school, and public facilities • Freedmen’s Bureau – agency that provided food shelter and medicine to freed slaves. It focused on finding jobs for freed African Americans
