  2. Gender • Girls are generally less involved in delinquency: • Typically, 25% of Index Crime Arrests • Except for Running Away and Sexual Misadventure

Gender • Girls’ proportional involvement (by arrest data) has been increasing (now about 1/3) • Arrest Rates are Creeping to Convergence, currently with faster declines among boys than among girls • Girls changing or police and others changing? • Most common crimes are minor for boys and girls • Boys: “other offenses,” theft, simple assaults, drug use • Girls: theft, “other offenses,” simple assaults, running away

Gender • Originally, girls’ delinquency was explained by such things as: • Masculine traits • Female sexuality • PMS • Although female delinquency is lower, there are higher rates among girls in the same conditions that produce higher rates among boys. • Factors that may differ by sex: • sexual abuse may lead to more delinquency among girls • family moves may produce more delinquency among girls
