  1. SDCLOA Pregame February 2012

  2. Game Management • Pre-game –20 mins prior • Survey field – any issues- c/l? • Coaches introductions and certify • Brief table • Stick checks – far cone • Set up field • Weapon check • Coin toss – line up - check net

  3. Game starts • Team familiarity and potential issues • S-A-O • Big Boy Lacrosse • Manage Bench/box- brief, courteous, direct • Set the Tone/they set the tempo • NO GOTCHA • Show hustle early - teamwork • Kids just want to play the game • Fairness

  4. Rule Changes • C/L – Technical – Inform Bob • End Cap • Face–off Rules – No Touching lines, pinning/holding crosse w/your crosse or any body part, no touching ball, ball in middle of crosse, • Airborne Player – U R where U were • Withholding – ball stuck in crosse or crosse lost and Ball under • Too few players – NOT offsides – COUNT FORWARD!!! • ONE 10 second count • Injured player – re-enter @ next dead ball – (affects goalie especially) • GIKI – Intentional Act of ball crossing midfield • Initiating with Head / Targeting Head/neck – With Crosse or Any Body Part – NR – Uncontrolled / Severe • 5 Minutes of PERSONAL Fouls = DQ (must put in game report) • Conduct – Gives us a broader brush – ANY act considered misconduct (Remember that USC = 3 min NR) • Stalling – it is the responsibility of the TEAM IN POSSESSION to attack • Player in Box MUST wait for Possession – Even if wing is open – can still have “hot”

  5. Mechanics & Communication • Face-off – only ONE opinion on possession – when do we pass it off • Quick Restarts – Goalie has 5 seconds – eye contact with partner • Hand Signals – subs, field ready, Boundary, In Goal Area, Foul Relay • Protect Shooter/Passer • Always count players and check clock(count poles) • Primaries – Priority, not Territory – who has lines, restart • COUNTS – L, T, Timer on subs, after penalty, Timeouts • Hustle – cover endline on shot, be in position on crease • Report Fouls – CNOTE – turn timer on after – partner prepares field • Time Out – Watch crossing players/benches • Goal – watch players, New POE for sportsmanship • Crew Consistency – call similar plays similarly – nothing loses credibility more • What are your working on to get better? • Do u have any concerns? • Bench side (1st and 4th?, 1st half?, entire game?)

  6. Special Situations • Flag down/fouls – communicate to partner first – restart location • Play-on – Quick, or when advantage ends • Stalling – when to put it on, signal, stays on until change of possession or goal • Simultaneous or Multiple Fouls – Come Together • ODD-Man situation – no stick checks • Even-man situation, even 5v5, faceoff! • Are we stick checking face-off middies? • Last 2 minutes

  7. Points of Emphasis • Equipment checks – 4 per game – unpredictable? (1 goal each side?, end of quarter?, Time-out?) – Head to toe….Full Service – 1 minute NR – fixable or equipment; 3 minutes NR not fixable • Players calling attention to themselves – varying degrees, use the ladder – warning to conduct to USC – get it EARLY • Deliberately grabbing Ball on Face-off – Illegal Procedure – REPEATED = USC – put in game report • Illegal Checks – Punching Blow / Cross checks(wider and higher) – especially by the Shorties • “Never give a dirtbag a break” BD

  8. Halftime • What did we get right • What can we do better/change • Clean up anything? • How are we going to handle last two minutes of tight game

  9. Postgame Brief • Discuss atypical situations • What would we do differently • Share good calls and bad calls – believe it or not, we all have the ones we don’t like, and sharing them is how we learn • Game Report in Arbiter - DQ’s entered into arbiter • Rate Your Umpire/crew

  10. Final Notes • Be a good official every game. Bad Habits in bad games translate to bad habits in good games. • Know your mechanics • Know your rules • Stay in shape • Expect the Unexpected • Every Game is on Film • Good Luck
