  3. Hypothesis • Scores in both genders will decrease from single task to multi-task • Greater decrease for men than for women (interaction between gender and task type)

Methods Continued • Mixed-subject design • Between subjects variable was Gender • Randomly Assigned • Single Task condition • Math test 10 min. • Film observation 5 min. • Multi-task • Total 10 min. • 5 min. film observation • Math test • IMs Sample IM Questions: “What time did you go to bed last night? “How is the weather today?”

  6. Evaluation • Number of math questions correct • Number of movie questions correct • 2(gender: male or female) by 2(task type: single or multi) ANOVA with repeated measures on the second factor

  10. What does it mean? • Both genders performed worse in multi-task than single-task but the decrease was greater for males than females • Explanation: Females are socially oriented while males are task oriented (Twenge, 1997)
