Preterite tense of –IR stem changing verbs *Other verbs that change e to i are: • medir – to measure • pedir – to ask for • preferir – prefer • referir – to tell • reñir – to argue • repetir – to repeat • sentir – to feel • vestir – to dress Yopedí Túpediste Élpidió Nosotrospedimos Vosotrospedisteis Ellospidieron Ejemplo: Ella pidió permiso para salir.

Pudrió • Ellos, Ellas, Uds. Pudrieron *OJO* * Verbs that end in –ar or –er that are stem-changing don’t change the stem vowel on the preterite tense. Por ejemplo: pensar – Él pensó mucho. volver – Uds. volvieron anoche.

Verbs that change ito y in the Preterite * -erand –irverbs whose stems end in a vowel change the endings of the preterite tense from –ióto –yóin the third-person singular and from –ieronto –yeronin the third-person plural. The endings for all other persons take an accent on the i.   14. U-Stem Verbs in the Preterite * The following verbs have irregular stems and ending in the preterite. *NOTE: The preterite endings of u-stem verbs do not have accent marks.

  16. The verbs DAR, SER, & IR *The verbs dar, ser, and ir are also irregular in the preterite. Dar takes the endings of regular –er, -ir verbs, but without a written accent in the first- and third person singular forms. Ser and irhave the same forms in the preterite. Dar – to give Di Diste Dio Dimos Disteis Dieron Ser – to be / Ir – to go Fui Fuiste Fue Fuimos Fuisteis Fueron Ejemplo: Ayer, fui a la casa de mi hermana. Yo le di un CD.
