  1. Plenary session:Knowledge sharing and learning Building Block session: Indexing, tagging, taxonomies, metadata

  2. What is the unique value proposition of this building block / Why do we need this for our CRPs? • Metadata improve the searchability and findability of resources • Controlled vocabulary with a set of 20-30 keywords are need to define the domain of a CRP • Keywords should be used consistently across a CRP to describe resources • Ensure the use of OAI-PMH for extracting and reusing resources by others Building block: Knowledge commons

  3. Who is already doing some work around this, how, with what success? • ILRI uses a agreed set of keywords to describe its resources with metadata • WLE established an initial set of keywords • CRP 6.2 currently works on controlled vocabulary on sentinel landscapes • FAO AGROVOC thesaurus is used by most / all CGIAR Centers for keywords in their library catalogs • As part of the former ICT/KM Program, the CGIAR developed an application profile for learning object metadata (CG LOM Core) Building block: Knowledge commons

  4. What are principles/critical success factors/interventions/actions needed to take advantage of this BB? • Apply OAI-PMH to make available resources for harvesting and further processing • Within CRP agree on a set of controlled vocabulary for describing resources • Need for a manageable size of controlled vocabularies (20-30) • Assure that CRP partners apply the agreed keywords consistently • Extending the use of metadata with enhanced user experience based on Semantic Web technologies (ontology) • Work on a pilot about a common topic of significance for a CRP to demonstrate the value of enhanced user experience • There are options to go deeper within Centers to have a more detailed set of key terms • There is a need for the Consortium Office to establish controlled vocabulary to work across all CRPs Building block: Knowledge commons

  5. Optional What were main discussion points? • Role / functions / types of metadata • Use of FAO AGROVOC • Reviewing current technologies, e.g., RDF, SKOS, OWL • Sample sites on enhanced use of metadata / search interfaces on learning resources and research information in agriculture • Achieving consistency of metadata across CRPs • Managing the quality of metadata Building block: Knowledge commons

  6. Optional What gaps remain and what will be done about it? • Use text mining to collect and identify controlled vocabulary from existing core resources • Test and work with Semantic Web technologies (RDF, SKOS, ontologies) for use in CRPs • Work on a pilot to demonstrate the enhanced user experience (with WLE) Building block: Knowledge commons
