  1. SECtions Webinar: June 2012What’s new with SMPTE: A Board and Benefit updateWith Paul Stechly, VP Sections

  2. Topics for discussion today AP’s Student Membership Challenge New Student Sections Centennial ideas New Member benefits for US Members

  3. AP’s – Where are we? In 2010, the governance documents, including the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws were approved by a vote of the membership. While the new Bylaws were effective immediately, further action is being taken to develop new operating procedures.

  4. Which ones need updating? All of them! • Governance • Finance/Operations • Education • Engineering • Membership/Sections The Board would like to see drafts of the Operations Manuals at its October meeting.

  5. Revisions are Continuing! • Old AP’s were restrictive and out of date and often lead to Section practices to circumvent the restrictions • New bylaws governing sections will contain very little on operations • Instead, they will point to a Operational Handbook that will be easier to update • Considerable input from Sections in reviewing the new by-laws to make them applicable to the real world

  6. How do we get more Student Members? Make it easy for them to find us and join Pay for their first year of membership Advertise the value of Membership

  7. How do we attract more students? • Forge ties with local institutions • Have more student events • Upgrade our Social Media presence on Facebook, Twitter and Linked In so that students can find us.

  8. Pay for their first year of MembershipThanks, Bill Miller! • Personal mission to give back and to generate a future SMPTE membership • Challenge to SMPTE members to match student memberships up to $5000 (of his own money)! • Since 2011, Bill has supported more than 18 students

  9. Broadening the Visibility of this Challenge In Two Parts Raise awareness for students and professors… apply to get your first year of SMPTE membership sponsored Raise awareness for members… encourage $35 donations

  10. Many Benefits to SMPTE • Connects students with SMPTE Members • Promotes membership values to students • Great “feel good” • Tax deductible for donor • Basis for future donation opportunities

  11. What Happens Next for Donations • Today, we can accept donations via check or credit card, offline • Donation offer is already part of renewal form, and we can add this specific program. • We will tag donations as part of SMC • Send donor a thank you letter that will serve as a tax receipt for the IRS • Track number of donations to invoice Bill Miller for match with a thank you letter • In future, we will enable online donations directly through SMPTE.org • Development needs to happen on civiCRM

  12. Matching Donations with Students • Students will apply for dues abatement, via email application • Requirements need to be defined along with applications process • Once approved, student record will be tagged with SMC so that we can follow them and renew them next year • Will track to ensure we don’t over spend against the fund

  13. Appeals to Members and Students • Launch marketing campaign in September • To Members: • “Match Bill Miller in the SMTPE Student Membership Challenge” • Challenge to run through December 2012 • To Students: • “Build your career with SMPTE and your first year is taken care of through the Student Membership Fund” • Continues until the Fund runs dry
