  1. Christmas Carols Presentation made by Nicole Abela and Gabrielle Cachia.

  2. Introduction • A Christmas carol is a carol whose lyrics center on the theme of Christmas or that has become associated with the Christmas season even though its lyrics may not specifically refer to Christmas. Both types of Christmas carols are included in this list. • Traditional Christmas carols mainly focus on the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus. Other Christmas songs focus on more secular Christmas themes, such as winter scenes, family gatherings, and Santa Claus.

  3. Classic Carols • Hark! The Herald Angels Sing • Joy To The World • The Twelve Days Of Christmas • Deck The Halls • Rudolph • Silent Night

  4. Hark! the Herald Angels The music is from the second chorus of a contata by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) written in 1840 to commemorate Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of printing. The words are from a hundred years earlier, written in 1739 by Charles Wesley whose brother, John, founded the Methodist Church. "Hark, how the welkin (heaven) rings," he orginally wrote.

  5. Joy To The World The words are by English hymn writer Isaac Watts, based on Psalm 98 in the Bible. The song was first published in 1719 in Watts' collection; The Psalms of David: Imitated in the language of the New Testament, and applied to the Christian state and worship. Watts wrote the words of "Joy to the World" as a hymn glorifying Christ‘s triumphant return at the end of the age, rather than a Christmas song celebrating his first coming as a child born in a stable. Only the second half of Watts' lyrics are still used today.

  6. The Twelve Days Of Christmas The Twelve Days of Christmas are the festive days beginning Christmas Day (25 December). This period is also known as Christmastide and Twelvetide. The Twelfth Night of Christmas is always on the evening of 5 January, but the Twelfth Day can either precede or follow the Twelfth Night according to which Christian tradition is followed. Twelfth Night is followed by the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. In some traditions, the first day of Epiphany (6 January) and the twelfth day of Christmas overlap.

  7. Deck The Halls Deck the Halls (original English title: Deck the Hall) is a traditional Yuletide/Christmas and New Years' carol. The “fa-la-la” refrains were probably originally played on the harp. The tune is Welsh dating back to the sixteenth century, and belongs to a winter carol, Nos Galan. In the eighteenth century Mozart used the tune to Deck the Hallsfor a violin and piano duet, Sonata No. 18. The repeated "fa la la" is from medieval ballads and used in Nos Galan, the remaining lyrics are American in origin dating from the nineteenth century.

  8. Rudolph Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a reindeer with a glowing red nose. He is popularly known as “Santa's ninth Reindeer” and, when depicted, is the lead reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh on Christmas Eve. The luminosity of his nose is so great that it illuminates the team's path through inclement winter weather. Rudolph first appeared in a 1939 booklet written by Robert L. May and published by Montgomery Ward.

  9. Silent Night Silent Night (German: StilleNacht, heiligeNacht) is a popular Christmas carol. The original lyrics of the song "StilleNacht" were written in Oberndorfbei Salzburg, Austria, by the priest Father Joseph Mohr and the melody was composed by the Austrian headmaster Franz Xaver Gruber.
