  19. Step 2: Create A “Call for Sponsors”

  20. Call for Sponsors While running the Call for Presentations (CFP) campaign, we simultaneously ran a Call for Sponsors (CFS). Promoted the CFS through social media channels and through a MailChimp email campaign. We gained one (1) Silver sponsor, two (2) Copper sponsor, one (1) DIY sponsor, and one (1) Donor.

  21. Step 3: Direct E-Mails

  22. Evaluated old sponsorship lists of past sponsors and past leads. • Networked with STC Summit sponsors to “sell” them on being potential sponsors the year before. • Created a new target list based on the old sponsor list audits and connections from Summit. • Wrote emails to targeted networking and marketing departments at each potential sponsor. • Personal touch from networking helps! Targeting Sponsors

  40. STC Southeastern MichiganPacesetter Award Presentation for 2018 STC Summit Leadership Program 20 May 2018

  41. Our Pacesetter Award activity STC Southeastern Michigan collaborated with local technical communication educators to present program meetings that • Supplemented course curricula; • Were scheduled during class time; and • Provided value to professional members as well as students.

  42. Why and how we did it • Council goals • Build on chapter history of academic – professional partnership. • Focus on developing sustained student participation. • Initial opportunity • Requested to provide professional/practitioner input on a specific topic in a graduate-level class. • Decided a panel presentation/discussion would be the best way to meet the request. • Offered the panel presentation as a program meeting scheduled at the class time and location. • Continued efforts • Planned and held two 2018 meetings jointly with a different academic program. • Planning a follow-up to the first 2017 meeting.

  43. Challenges • Scheduling conflicts for those not enrolled in the class, including prospective speakers. • Differing objectives among collaborators. • Potential conflict of interest situation. • Appearance of endorsing one academic program over others.

  44. Benefits General • Increases student outreach / stronger academic – professional partnership. • Promotes STC and the value of STC membership. • Provides educational opportunities for technical communicators at most or all experience levels. Specific metrics • Chapter gained two new student members and mentoring relationships. • Attendance (students and overall) at future programs increased by about 50%.

  45. Your community can do this • Reach out to technical communication faculty of colleges/universities in your geographic area or, for SIGs, instructors of specific courses in your area of interest. (Often they are STC members.) • Request topics/ offer programming to complement their course content. (Example: Training on a selected software tool provided by a certified trainer.) • All communities can work with instructors anywhere to offer virtual programs available to all technical communicators and students. • Schedule meetings at class time and location as much as possible.

  46. More information • See the program recaps on the STC Southeastern Michigan blog (http://stc-sm.org) • Contact council@stc-sm.org
