He began his artistic work as a painter, but found that his architectural work was more impressive. He moved to Milan around 1474, and redesigned and built several churches, including the Santa Maria delle Grazie (1492-1499) and the Cloisters of Sant‘Ambrogio, Milan (1497–1498). In 1499, the threat of French invasion of Milan drove Bramante to the city of Rome. In Rome he would become close friends with Cardinal Della Rovere, soon to be Pope Julius II. Bramante would gain his respect as an architect through his building of his Tempietto of San Pietro in Montorio (1510), which is still considered one of the most harmonious buildings of the Renaissance. x x Education School Attended: Apprenticed with: • Andrea Mantegna • Piero della Francesca

  2. Quote: “The dome of the Pantheon over the vault of the Temple of Peace.”c.1505  Description of his design for St Peter's, Rome What I am most famous for: Bramante is most famous for his plans for the complete rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica. In 1503 Pope Julius II hired Bramante to draw up plans for the reconstruction of the basilica. It was to be the grandest architectural commission of the 16th century. The cornerstone of the building was laid during a ceremony on April 18, 1506. Bramante's plan included four great chapels, each one capped with a dome. St. Peter’s Basilica would have one grand dome in the center of it, modeled after the dome of the Pantheon. At the time of his death (1514), Bramante had erected only the four main piers and the arches which were to support the dome. However, his plans for the dome would not die with him. His ideas would be taken and used by the great Michelangelo , who would continue working on the structure. Michelangelo would also die defore the dome was complete. The dome of St. Peter’s would finally be completed by  Giacomo della Porta who was to be assisted by Domenico Fontana in 1590. Historically, his importance is due to the way he inspired and influenced the architects that came after him, rather than through his original buildings, few of which survive unaltered. Name of Work: St. Peter’s Basilica Year Completed: 1590 Medium: Architecture Description: The dome of St. Peter’s is the most famous element of Bramante’s plans for the basilica. Construction would not be completed until 76 years after his death.
