State of Teacher Preparation • The American Association of Colleges for TeacherEducation (AACTE, 2010) suggests that redesigning teacher education licensure programs to incorporate clinically-based programming is critical to the development of effectiveteachers • In the current teacher education program at CSU prospective teacher candidates learn theory in isolation from practice with minimal experiences in K-12 classrooms until they are near degree completion

Clinical Model • National momentum for a “clinical model” of teacher education is growing. • Views teaching as a practice-based profession, like medicine or nursing, with a closely monitored induction period. • Aims to close the gap between pedagogical theory and practice by creating “teaching hospitals” in which student teachers learn alongside the professionals, thus shifting the balance of teacher preparation from higher education and into schools.

  4. Clinical Model • Clinical model is based upon a scientific, evidence-based view of education in which teachers use experimental logic when they plan for instruction: • Evaluate their students’ previous knowledge, construct hypotheses about the best methods for teaching, • Develop teaching plans based upon those hypotheses, observe results, and • Base further instruction on the evidence collected (National Institute for Literacy, 2006).

Project CREATE • The Curriculum Redesign Effort Advancing Teacher Education is a redesign of teacher licensure programs at CSU. • Based on a professional, collaborative, integrative, clinical model for teacher preparation that will result in student-focused, teacher licensure programs. • early childhood, middle childhood, and special education (mild/moderate and moderate/intensive)

Purpose of Project CREATE • Tighten integration among courses and between course work and clinical work in schools; • Design extensive and intensively supervised clinical work integrated with course work; and • Develop and nurture close, proactive relationships with schools that serve diverse learners effectively and develop and model good teaching. • CREATE aims to close the gap between pedagogical theory and practice

Desired Outcomes • Project CREATE will prepare candidates to be highly effective and qualified to teach in high need schools and districts. • Project CREATE outcomes include… • focus on student learning, • provide extended and enhanced clinical experience, • strengthen teacher license curriculum, • improve teacher support and • measure effectiveness

  12. Project CREATE & Student Success • Project CREATE will build, maintain and enhance academic excellence • Ensure student success while simultaneously introducing streamlined teacher license programs • Provide an increased number and increased quality of field hours in classroom.

Project CREATE & Student Success • The goal of Project CREATE is to design quality programs that will be completed in 120 credit hours. • Current drafts of new program plans range in hours from 112-128 • Project CREATE is developed around a cohort model • traditional students will move through the last two and a half years of their programs in cohorts

The CREATE Institute • Funded by Martha Holden Jennings Foundation • The CREATE Institute aims to launch CREATE programs • The CREATE Institute intends on providing the professional development required for faculty members, supervisors and mentor teachers to learn about co-teaching and practical strategies for implementation. • Co-teaching is scheduled to be the primary topic for the Summer 2014 CREATE Institute.

Project CREATE & Student Success • As CSU pre-service teachers are placed in clinical experiences, the needs of the school and district will be investigated and accommodated resulting in • pre-service candidates will be more likely to secure employment because the candidates will have spent time in the district schools • district needs will be identified and pre-service candidates will be prepared with district needs in mind • pre-service candidates will be better prepared to deal with the complexities and realities of teaching

Project CREATE • Project CREATE will result in : • Implementation of a clinically based teacher education program at CSU – Fall 2014 • Streamlined teacher license programming • Student supports that increase student retention (e.g. cohort model; less complex programs; more clinical experience) • Increase the likelihood that candidates will be hired upon graduation.
