Strategy • Launched Summer 2008 following consultation • Strong feedback identifying three key areas : • Increasing participation in sport = GROW • Tackling drop-off = SUSTAIN • Developing talent = EXCEL • Drive to invest and deliver on Sport through NGBs. • Focus on creating a world class community sports system in England. Creating sporting opportunities in every community

Sustain (60% of investment) Grow (15% of investment) Excel (25% of investment) More people satisfied with the aspects of sport that are important to them 25% fewer 16 to 18 year-olds dropping out of selected sports Appropriate talent support systems for each sport so that more talented performers move onto elite programmes One million adults taking part in more sport by 2012/13 Helping more young people to access five hours of sport each week Creating sporting opportunities in every community

  6. How are we going to get there ? • GROW :1m doing more sport, contribution to 5 hour offer. • NGBs : Driving growth in participation as part of whole sport plans. (500,000). (£480m 46 sports, £10m per annum CSPs). • Engaging Higher Education : Strategic partnership arrangements to increase participation. (300,000). • Engaging the Third Sector : (100,000). • Football Foundation investment and development of multi-sport provision. • Commercial Strategy : Leverage of £50m by 2011/2012. (150,000) • Partnerships – NGBs,CSPs,Local Govt. • Investment Strategy. Creating sporting opportunities in every community

What sort of things has the money been invested into? • Aiming for 50,000 participants over 4 years • 460 training to become project leaders • Local partnerships forming: Jog York, Run Liverpool • Women’s Running Network up 40% • 106,500 people have participated in major Skyride events • 234 trained Leaders • Planning with over 45 Local Authorities • Over 80 percent of participants would definitely return to ride again Creating sporting opportunities in every community 17

  18. Sport Unlimited is striving to respond to what young people actually want 100+ different activities Focus on the 11 to 19s Targets 50% ‘semi sporty’ £36 million funding from 2008 to 2011 900,000 retained by 2011 300,000 transition Creating sporting opportunities in every community

  19. Sport Unlimited Year 1 Achievements • Year 1 actual engage – 219,720 • Year 1 actual retain - 177,358 • 49% girls, 51% boys • 32% of young people transitioned Creating sporting opportunities in every community

Commercial Strategy • Just Giving Partnership to support NGBs with Community Amateur Sport Club (CASC) status – estimation could raise over £24m thorugh online donations over next 5 years for community sports clubs over next three years. • Partnership with Marks and Spencer in development – Active Women. • Facebook partnership (estimated value £20m). Higher Education • Development of HE partnership through BUCS • Completion of audit and analysis to inform partnership work. • Funding to BUCS to build national sports development capacity (£480k over 3 years). • Publication of Higher Education and Community Sport Plan. • Identified 19 key NGBs ready to work with HE – End of March 2010 will know where and how NGBs will be working with HEI’s • Announcement of £10m themed round March 2010. Further Education • What have we done ? • Engagement in 5 hr offer – FESCO’s and Sport Unlimited are key delivery mechanisms. • Mini audit of CSPs. • Developing understanding through NGBs of FESCO programme and who to work with. • Report on Future of FE sport research – independent report – creating a short term landscape partners group to agree which recommendations to take forward. • Rachel.graham@sportengland.org tel : 020 7273 1665 Creating sporting opportunities in every community

  24. Retention • The strategy has a target of increasing participation within the 16-18 age group for nine key sports. • Challenge : • 6 of the 9 sports the gap is remaining stable. (Badminton, Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Rugby Union, Tennis) • 3 of the 9 sports the gap has got bigger. (Football, Gymnastics, Rugby League). • Activity to support this work : • Quarterly retention specific workshops are being run sharing best practice. • In-depth analysis of the current available research and collaborative working by the chosen NGBs. • Desk research into best practice from other sectors and geographies – ie commercial sector • Bespoke research in common with our partners - WSF, YST etc. • A detailed review of the interventions identified by the nine key sports. • Preparation of an Action Plan for the NGBs to use to help achieve their retention targets. • Regular 1 to 1 reviews to assess progress and review interventions. Satisfaction • At the heart of sustain is the idea that people's continued involvement is driven by the fact that they enjoy taking part and that this - in turn - is heavily affected by the quality of the sporting experience. • Development of sport satisfaction survey – now in yr 2. (44,000 sample). • Development of satisfaction profiles in each sport. • The survey measures satisfaction across different areas to include: • Value for money, Performance, Social/belonging, Facilities and playing, Environment, Organisation: people and staff, Organisation: ease of participating, Diversion and release, Exertion and fitness, Officiating, Coaching. • Looks at grass roots participants, club members, talent pool. • Each sport set targets. • Use of the data to better inform approaches and priorities. Challenges and next steps – plenty ! • Mid yr NGB reviews – some sports motoring, others finding things more challenging. • Some sports needing greater support/guidance. • Number of sports agreed action plans developed. • Developing better understanding of causality. • Pace of engagement with CSPs. • End of yr reviews for NGBs April 2010. • 12 months to go on Sport Unlimited. • Local government efficiency agenda and NI8 progress around the country. • Reducing the drop off 16-18yrs. • Facility infrastructure and priorities 2 complete, plenty to go.
