  1. Objective 03/19/2013 Describe the different types of instruments used to take weather measurements. INTRO • Pick up worksheet from front table • WEEKLY WS #28: • If you did not have the benefit of the weather forecast on the news, radio, or television, how would you forecast the weather?

  2. Weather Forecasting

  3. Weather Forecasting • Weather Forecasting Technology • Weather balloon • Carries electronic equipment into upper atmosphere • Wind sock or vane • Indicates wind directions • Doppler radar • Tracks precipitation • Weather satellites • Provides images/data of weather systems over large areas

  4. Weather Forecasting • Barometer • An instrument that measures atmospheric pressure • One end open so air pressure can move the mercury level within • The higher the air pressure, the better the weather

  5. Weather Forecasting • Anemometer • An instrument used to measure wind speed • Faster the cups spin, the faster the wind is moving

  6. Weather Forecasting • Thermometer • How does temperature effect weather? • An instrument that measures and indicates temperature • Warm temperatures can bring humidity and rain • Cold temperatures can bring dry air and snow

  7. Temperature • Isotherms • Lines that connect areas of similar temperature.

  8. Temperature

  9. Temperature • Questions to Consider: • How do the isotherms help you to understand what weather is like in different parts of the country? • How might this be useful in forecasting the weather conditions in a particular area? • What patterns can you see in temperatures? Where is it typically warmer? Where are the temperatures typically cooler? • What reasons can you think of to explain the temperature patterns you notice?

  10. Objective 03/19/2013 Describe the different types of instruments used t take weather measurements. OUTRO • WEEKLY WS #28: • Which weather tool do you think is the most important in collecting data on atmospheric conditions? Why?
