Choosing RUHS Classes • RUHS Counselors will be visiting you individually in March • Before selecting your classes: -discuss options with your parent/guardian -visit www.redondounion.org’s “Academic” tab to read course descriptions in the parent/student handbook and “Counseling” tab to learn more about college preparation.

  4. High School Preparation! What can we do in Middle School? • Develop good study skill habits • Discuss future academic and career goals • Take challenging classes • Be involved in school • Go on academic fieldtrips • Get involved in extracurricular and community activities

High School Preparation (continued) Skills to develop to ensure academic/social success • Take initiative: use the website, ask questions, speak with your teachers and counselor to stay on track • Be responsible: when your assignments are due be sure to turn them in on time, study for tests, go to class prepared with all of your materials, be on time, get involved in the academic process, check the portal, choose your friends wisely • Advocate for yourself: ask your teachers questions when things are unclear, send your teachers e-mails, communicate! • Be more independent: rely on yourself, you are on your way to becoming an adult

  6. What is a “Credit”? • Credits are the points earned for passing a class. YOU MUST PASS THE CLASS TO GET THE CREDITS FOR IT! • 5 credits are earned for a ½ year class • 10 credits are earned for a 1 year class • Semester grades are reflected on transcript

  8. Graduation Requirements • Earn 230 credits in required coursework • Pass 1 year Algebra • Pass California High School Exit Exam (CaHSEE): English and Math

Class Acronyms • AP = Advanced Placement Weighted college level classes that give the student the opportunity to take a test for college credit at the completion of the class • CP = College Preparatory Class meets the standards for college admission • Honors Rigorous courses that students must be recommended for by current teachers

  12. What About Summer School? • If you fail a class, you don’t get credits for it. No credits= No diploma • If you get a “D” in a class, the class can’t count toward a college application. • If you get an “F” or a “D” you have to re-take the class. • If you have to take summer school, it isn’t free. There is a fee for summer school classes.

  16. D Requirement SCIENCE-2 years required, 3 years recommended 1 from Life Sci.– Biology, Physiology 1 from Physical Sci.-Chemistry, Physics

  17. E Requirement FOREIGN LANGUAGE— 2 years required, 3 years recommended Must be the same language

  18. F Requirement VISUAL & PERFORMING ART 1 year of same class required Dance, Drama, Music, and/or Visual Art

  19. G Requirement OTHER COLLEGE PREP ELECTIVE 1 year required Fulfilled by completing Electives on UC Approved List (may include extra year of math, science, foreign language, or advanced visual performing art)

Why Should I Complete A-Gs!? • Even if you are going to a community college, you have to take placement tests— the higher you place the faster you transfer • Keep strong study habits for use later in life and what you learn now can be applied later • You don’t want to limit your options to go to a university by not fulfilling the A-G requirements now!

Required Prerequisitesfor Honors • English – “A” in current course, teacher recommendation and Advanced on CST • Math – Determined on grade, CST, teacher recommendation and diagnostic exam • Science – “A” in current course, teacher recommendation and Advanced in CST • Foreign Language – Choose language, teacher recommendation for level 1 or 2

  23. Biology vs Honors Biology • The College Prep Biology class is 1 level more challenging than 8th grade science. Students are taught inquiry based using labs to guide most of the learning. • Honors Biology is 2 levels higher than 8th grade science. It is also inquiry based, but also prepares students for high level lectures in future sciences. Students interested in Biology Honors, should know it is: • Designed for students who will take AP Level classes Junior or Senior Year • Students should take Geometry concurrent with the course • Students will have one hour of HW per day with additional study time • Students must be motivated and dedicated to put work into the course

Engineering S.T.E.M. • Course 1:  Introduction to Engineering Design • Focus is on the design process used in engineering, from brainstorming an idea through 3D computer modeling • Course 2: Principles of Engineering • Students analyze, design, and build many different engineering systems to explore various technologies related to manufacturing processes and engineering systems. • Course 3: Digital Electronics • Focus is on learning how digital circuits work and obtaining professional skills of circuit construction. Future course: • AP Computer Science (Offered in 2013-14)

  25. Staying Eligible for College • As, Bs and Cs ONLY! • Ds and Fs affect your eligibility • RUHS summer school classes are not guaranteed to be offered and cost money to take

Staying Eligible for RUHS Athletics/Activities ·       MAINTAIN A 2.O OR “C” GRADE POINT AVERAGE OR BETTER ON A 4.0 SCALE. ·       RECEIVE NO MORE THAN 1 “U” IN CITIZENSHIP ON A QUARTER OR SEMESTER REPORT. ·       COMPLETE ATHLETIC PACKET FROM THE RUHS ATHLETIC OFFICE. ·       BE AN ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY MEMBER (PURCHASE AN ASB STICKER/CARD). First quarter eligibility will be determined by the semester grades received on the June report card. Summer school credits and grades for new course work will be counted toward making up credit and/or GPA deficiencies incurred during the grading period ending in June. Grades are looked at EVERY QUARTER FOR ELIGIBILITY

RUHS Counselor Tips • If enrolled in Honors classes, be sure to visit the RUHS website for summer assignments/reading lists. • Get involved in RUHS summer sports activities, it is a great way to meet new friends. • Make an appointment with your counselor in order to develop your four year plan. • Remember, credits are important, you need 230 credits to graduate! • Use the portal daily to stay informed. • Visit the RUHS website regularly. • Naviance accounts will be created for you when you get to RUHS. Use Naviance! • Don’t fail a class, there are real consequences for failing. Summer school classes are no longer free. • Stay organized, be an advocate for yourself, get involved, get to know your teachers in order to develop relationships with them and have fun!
