  2. Warming up: Listen, understand and retell • “Eliminating violence based on sex” (from BBC) • a. What is the main idea of the news story? • b. How many parts can you divide the story into? • c. Can you recall as much info as possible in each part?

  3. One-on-One Interpreting • a. E-C, and ask the speaker: • How do you rate your partner? • Any mistakes to correct? • b. C-E, and ask the speaker: • How do you rate your partner? • Can you suggest ways to rearrange order of words?

  4. Vocabulary: vie to answer fast! • Step 1: • Identify key word in the sentences you hear & use it in a new sentence you create! • Step 2: • Vie to interpret the new sentence your classmate just created!

Going over steps of interpreting What do you remember about the steps? • i. listen and understand the idea of the passage; • ii. tell the key information from the rest; • iii. pick 2-3 key words for each key point (or sentence) and jot them down in abbreviations; • iv. sketch the logic flow of information with symbols and signs; • v. look back and recall the source information. • vi. Express in the target language.

  7. The republic of kangaroos is experiencing an apparently peaceful period of development. To the citizen’s ignorance, however, various social problems are fermenting deeper down. The first danger lies in the imbalance between genders. Kangaroo parents prefer female children as they turn out to be more effective plant gatherers, and this has caused an ever decreasing birth rate of baby boys. • The second danger lies in the implementation of grassland farming machinery, which has caused many working-class kangaroos to lose their jobs.
