  2. Ruby Payne-Scott 1912-1981- Sydney University from 1929 to 1936 . Physics degrees, BSc and MSc- Radar research in Sydney (CSIR) 1941 to 1945. First radio astronomy experiment 10 cm in Mar 1944- Started solar noise research (solar radio astronomy ) in October 1945. Type I bursts (200MHz) early 1946, aperture synthesis proposed by Pawsey and Payne-Scott. Sea- cliff interferometer, first interferometer used in radio astronomy- Type III bursts discovered later in 1946 via her determination of the time delays. Type IIs in the giant flare of 8 March 1947- Potts Hill swept lobe interferometer in 1948-1951, movies of motions of Type IVM bursts at 97 MHz - Resigned in mid 1951 for the birth of her son Peter Hall- well known mathematician University of Melbourne- Her daughter, the famous artist Fiona Hall, born in 1953- Campaign for equal rights for women. Payne-Scott lost her permanent position at CSIRO in 1950 when discovered she ..was married to Bill Hall since 1944. She fought against this as well as for equal wages for women- She had a prominent left wing orientation , member of Communist Party Australia- Prominent bush walker with the Sydney Bush Walkers- Finished her life as secondary school teacher in Sydney from 1963 to 1974 at Danebank School UR URSI Sydney 1952 Payne-Scott, A.
