Studying in higher education is…

This article discusses the findings of a research study conducted by SIHO (Support Centre for Inclusive Higher Education) on the experiences and challenges faced by students with disabilities in higher education. The study highlights the importance of identity, past experiences, making choices, participation, perspectives of others, disclosure, accommodations, and the role of friends, family, and hobbies. The article concludes with recommendations for fostering dialogue, sharing good and bad practices, and increasing awareness among higher education institutions.

  3. 1 SIHO • 'Support Centre for Inclusive Higher Education' • Supports institutions for higher education: • in order to realize inclusive higher education • to create equal chances and full participation for students with disabilities

  4. SIHO 3 main tasks: Provision of services to higher education institutions (consultancy, training, ...) Networking with (inter)national partners in the field of disability studies (which involves several disciplines) Research Importance of insidersperspective!

  5. 2 Method • Students contacted through disability coordinators • 28 participants from 9 Flemish institutions for higher education • Semi-structured interview • Thematic analysis with Nvivo
