OFFICIAL/FORMAL& UNWRITTEN RULES • Official/Formal rules: These types of rules are “LAWS OF THE GAME”, you are not correctly involved in an activity unless they are being followed. • Unwritten Rules: This type of rule tends to be related more towards conduct, behaviour and general sporting etiquette such as: Shaking hands at the end of play or putting a ball out of play for an injured opponent to receive treatment.

SAFETY RULES • A rule is designed to shape an activity • A safety rule in rugby is that you can’t tackle above neck height • A safety rule in football is that you can’t kick feet high (high feet) and is considered dangerous play • safety equipment is needed as protective padding in cricket, hockey and American football -name it and why? • Fixed safety equipment is required for shot putt, and rugby.

  3. SPECIFIC RULES FOR DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES • Badminton – must serve from below waist • Volleyball- must serve from behind service line • Football- Pass back rule-keeper can’t pick up • Basketball- Double dribble- not allowed TASK: HOW DO THESE RULES HELP FLOW OR LEARNING?

RULES TO IMPROVE FLOW • Goal Keeper Only has six seconds to release the ball once picked up, also: he cannot pick the ball up from a pass back ! • In Basketball the team with possession must make a shot within 24 seconds of receiving the ball (Beat The CLOCK SHOT ) GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A RULE TO IMPROVE FLOW WHEN LEARNING VOLLEYBALL

ADAPTING RULES • Rules can be adapted to improve skill learning Eg catch in volleyball • Equipment can be adapted Eg lower net, softer ball, smaller racquet • Size of the court can be adapted Smaller or bigger court • Number of players can be adapted Small-sided games means more touches HOW DID YOU ADAPT THE EQUIPMENT FOR A BEGINNER IN BADMINTON ?

CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOUR • General examples of good conduct and behaviour: • Accept decisions • Respect other players • Shake hands • Activity examples • Football-kick ball out of play for injury • Golf- stand quietly when opponent plays • Rugby- respect referees decisions GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SAFETY RULE, A RULE OF FAIR PLAY AND AN EXAMPLE OF UNWRITTEN ETIQUETTE FROM YOUR COURSE IN PE
