  1. QRL kick-off meetingPresentation of the cryogenic extensions for the QRL project A. Bouillot - AT/ACR 20.10.2005

  2. Content • Introduction • Type, location and numbers • Activities supplied by Air Liquide • Components, external supports, interconnections, … • Documentation and drawings • Engineering design • Main issues and status (external supports and cryogenic extensions elements) • Fabrication • Main issues and status (external supports, cryogenic extensions elements, conditioning and tests) • Installation • Main issues and status (external supports, transport, positioning and adjustment of the elements, leak tests, …) • Schedule and planning A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  3. Introduction • A cryogenic extension allows to link the QRL jumpers to different clients (DFBA, DFBL, Q6, ACS). • The diameter of the cryogenic extensions is 355.6 mm A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  4. Introduction • They are composed of several interconnection pipes (between 4 and 9 pipes) with different internal diameters (from 10 mm to 80 mm) Interface of the cryogenic extension element QRLXD (sector 8-1) Interface of the cryogenic extension element QRLXE (sector 8-1) A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  5. Introduction • Type, number and location • Different designs : • Straight elements  about 3m with diameter 355 mm • Elbow elements  about 2.5x2.5 m2 each • Weight : ~ 80 kg/m A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  6. Activities supplied by Air Liquide • External supports • Design • Procurement • Transport to CERN • Elements : • Design, fabrication, conditioning • Transport to CERN • Interconnections • Design • Procurement of the different components: vacuum jackets, MLI A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  7. Documentation • Drawings associated with each cryogenic extension • All Drawings are available on the AT/ACR-cd server : • \Srv2_div\CRYO\ACR-CD\Projects\QRL\Drawings\Plans TIF-PDF AL\cryo extensions\ A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  8. Engineering design • Straight and elbow pipes are in Invar material • The extremities of each interconnection pipes are equipped with Stainless Steel sleeves • Most of cryogenic extensions have no active thermal shield. Each interconnection pipe is equipped with MLI. Only cryogenic extensions QRLXF and QRLXH (linking ACS) have active thermal shield. • The vacuum jacket is in Stainless Steel. • The number of elements composing one cryogenic extension can vary from 1 to 4 elements. • Interconnection pipes are supported inside the vacuum jacket with spacers • The thermal losses per meter is around equal to ~ 1.5 W/m. • External interconnections are made with rigid sleeves. • Horizontal cardan compensator on QQS jumper side. • Flexible hoses are added on Q6 and DFBA side for the cryogenic extensions QRLXD, QRLXA, QRLXC, QRLXK and QRLXL. A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  9. Engineering design • Status A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20

  10. Fabrication • Main issues • The fabrication takes place at DTA (Air Liquide-Sassenage). • Each interconnection pipe (Invar) is He tested after the prefabrication. • The possible weld interfaces can be : • Stainless Steel / Invar • Invar / Invar • Each weld is X-rayed (norm EN 25817-Class B) and have associated qualifications • Each cryogenic extension undergoes the following tests : • Pressure test • He test • Cold test A. Bouillot, AT/ACR-cd, 2005.10.20
