  1. WiDA World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment is WiDA. This program organizes language around content areas as a means of structure for its English Language proficiency standards and assessments. The goal for using this system of organization is to help educators working with English Language Learners (ELLs) and any student of need, to see more clearly how language can be taught in depth within all content areas.

  2. WiDA Relationship Levels • Performance Definitions, Can Do Descriptors and the strands of Model Performance Indicators (MPI), describe the English Language Proficiency (ELP) levels. • Each of these levels build upon each other.

  3. WiDA Relationship Pyramid

  4. Performance Definitions • The Performance Definitions are the foundation for the English Language Proficiency Standards. • They provide the criteria that shapes each of the six levels of ELP. • The descriptions for each of the six levels correspond to the categories or components of the Speaking and Writing Rubrics. • The three levels that are addressed in each level are: • Linguistic Complexity- the amount and quality of speech or writing for a given situation. • Vocabulary Usage- the specificity of words and phrases for a given context. • Language Control- the comprehensibility of the communication based on the amount and types of errors.

  5. Can Do Descriptors • The Descriptors are the second level from bottom of the relationship pyramid. • They build upon the Performance Definitions. • Can Do Descriptors contain criteria that reflect the characteristics of English Language Learners (ELLs) from Kinder- garten through 12th grade for each proficiency level.

  6. Can Do Descriptors • Reading • Writing • Speaking • Listening MODALITIES

  7. WIDA CAN DO DESCRIPTORS

  8. English Language Proficiency Levels The English language proficiency levels do not operate in isolation. They are part of a comprehensive educational system created to be used with English language learners (ELLs) and students of need.

  9. ACCESS Test • The ACCESS test, administered annually, is designed to monitor the progress of student’s English language development. • The test covers the Language of Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Social and Instructional Language. • The test scores, though not the only piece of data, are a valuable indicator of the student’s English Language Proficiency. • Data is used to build and design instruction and assessments (both inside and outside of ESL classroom)

  10. Levels of English Proficiency: Teachers will use their WiDA Access scores and class rosters to plot their students scores on a blank Can Do Descriptor grid sheet based on these six levels . 6.Reaching (highest) 5.Bridging 4.Expanding 3.Developing 2.Beginning 1.Entering (lowest)

  11. Strand of Model Performance Indicators • The MPIs are the building blocks of the standards. • These strands are assembled according to the comprehensive levels of English language proficiency. • They compose the smallest section in the pyramid. • The indicators are divided into 4 domains. • They are the most detailed representations of the English language proficiency standards.

  12. The first domain of an MPI is its Language function ,it refers to the process that ELLs use to communicate in a variety of situations.

  13. The next domain is the example topic, it relates to the context or backdrop for language interaction within a school. The language focus for the content topic may be social, instructional or academic, depending on the standard.

  14. The third domainis represented by some form of support. There are 3 types of support, graphic, interactive, or sensory. This support comes from language proficiency level 4 (see Can Do Descriptor chart), which provides students with a means to access meaning of social and instructional language.

  15. The final domain is an example. When writing an example it should contain each of the 3 domains that are described above. • NCSCOS- Grade 1-Math    3.03    Compare and contrast geometric figures. Language Objective: ????? Compare and contrast triangles and hexagons (e.g., The triangle has only three sides) in writing using a graphic organizer.

  16. Language Function-What do you want them to do? Example Topic – What do you want them to know about? Support-How can they access the information Example (e.g.)-Example topic
