  2. This workshop will cover: • Senior Year Timelines • College Admission Testing • Letters of Recommendation • Transcript Requests • College Application Process • Scholarships and Financial Aid • Important Events • Staying Informed

Timeline for Senior Year • October-November • Credit check letters (Sept) • Prepare your college applications • Request Letters of Recommendation • Check Private Colleges – dates vary • December • Research Financial Aid/Scholarship Opportunities • January-March • File FAFSA and GPA Verification Form – March 2 • Apply for Assist-A-Grad • April • Continue researching Scholarship Applications • Notifications from colleges • Take Assessment Tests – as Necessary • May • Make your Final Decision • UC/CSU Deadline for Intent to register – May 1 • June • Graduation!! • Send Final Official Transcripts – Before end of June – check your campus requirements

  4. College Admission Testing • SAT and ACT • All colleges use both SAT and/or ACT with Writing • Most schools accept scores through the December test date of senior year • Subject Exams are optional for UC’s– check individual campuses/majors • Be sure to have scores sent to colleges

  5. California State University • Application Fee: $55.00 • Apply on-line at October 1–November 30th at www.csumentor.edu • 3.0 minimum eligibility • Apply to more than one campus if possible – many campuses are impacted • Eligibility index based on GPA and test scores • Many campuses require December transcript • CSU Workshop Date: October 6th, 1:15 p.m.

University of California • Application Fee: $70.00 • Apply on-line November 1-30th at www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions • All applicants have a comprehensive review by admission officers • Personal statement required • Apply to more than one campus • Check majors at each campus • UC Application Workshop: Nov. 3, 1:15 p.m

  7. Private/Independent • Check individual websites • Admission requirements vary • Application deadline dates vary • Many campuses require on-line applications through the Common Application at www.commonapplication.org or www.sendEdu.org

  8. Letters of Recommendation • Use letter of recommendation form • Available in the Counseling Office • Please allow recommender minimum of two weeks to prepare letter. • Important component in some college and scholarship applications • Not required for UC or CSU applications

Transcript Requests • Unofficial Transcripts • Senior transcripts sent in mail - September • Used to enter courses on college applications • Please review transcripts to ensure accuracy • Official Transcripts – Mrs. Simpson • Please allow 5 working days for pick-up or mailing • Electronic transcripts – Be sure to include Mr. Floyd as your counselor contact • Pay close attention to college requests for official transcript submission – Typically December and June

Web-based program designed to help students: • Explore colleges and careers • Discover careers related to their personality and interests • Keep track of colleges students are thinking about • Sign up to meet with college representatives • Build a resume • Keep track of hours spent volunteering, working, and extra-curricular activities

How to Log-in Parents • www.connection.naviance.com/whitneyhs • Click “I need to register” • Registration code: your student’s permanent ID and your registration code (ex. 1234567M) • Registration Codes • Mother = M • Father = F • Stepmother = SM • Stepfather = SF • You will be prompted to create your username and password for future use. Students • www.connection.naviance.com/whitneyhs • Username: first name.lastname (ex. john.smith) • Password: your permanent student ID # • You will be prompted to update your password when you log-in.

Community Colleges/Career Technical Colleges • Career Technical Schools – Career Preparation • Community Colleges • Sierra College Registration begins January 2015 • Associate Degree or Career Certificate • Preparation to transfer to 4-year university • Check transfer agreements at specific school • Application deadlines vary

Sierra College • Parent Nights at Sierra– Oct. 1 & 22, Nov. 5 & 19 • www.sierracollege.edu • Registration opens in early January • Take assessment tests at Sierra College in English and math (bring unofficial transcript/test scores/EAP scores) • Meet with a Sierra College Counselor • Pick class in May

Scholarships & Financial Aid • Scholarship Coordinator – Sally Randazzo, WHS College and Career Center • Dollars for Scholars Scholarship List Updated Monthly • Check college websites • Excellent resource: www.fastweb.com • FAFSA – www.pin.ed.gov • Filing Date begins in January • Cal Grant GPA Verification Form • Deadline March 2nd • WHS Financial Aid Night: January 14, 2015
