  2. Birth • Mother: Keopuolani • Father: Kamehameha I • Place: Hilo • Date: Nov of 1796 or 1797

  3. Childhood Tradition: • Children of ali`i are raised by Hanai (adoptive parents) • Liholiho was actually raised in his father’s household. He was put under Ka`ahumanu’s care • Liholiho often traveled with his father • Liholiho was named as K’s heir when he was 5

  4. Childhood Treatment by Kamehameha • Liholiho because of his mother, had more mana and sacredness • Kamehameha treated him like a god • K. would say things like… • My haku • My god • My treasure • Never called him my keiki

  5. Personal Life • Married to Kamamalu • No children Queen Kamamalu

  6. Becoming King • Was with K. when he passed away • He was only 21 or 22 years old • Ka`ahumanu mentions that it was K’s wish for her to share in the ruling with Liholiho • No proof that it was what K. was wanted, but Liholiho agreed • Ka`ahumanu is now Kuhina Nui or prime minister

  8. Notable Events While King • Abolishment of the Kapu System • Lihiliho ate with Ka`ahumanu and his mother at a feast, ending the Kapu system • This was only 6 months after K. had died Kapu

  9. Notable Events While King • Coming of the Missionaries • March 30, 1820 the ship Thaddeus landed in Hawai`i • Came from Boston, sailed for 5 months • Rev. Hiram Bingham and his wife were on the boat • Liholiho allowed them to stay on a 1 year trial basis

  11. Notable Events While King • Sandalwood Trade • Liholiho gave the lesser chiefs control of the trade • Chiefs cut all the trees, not saving the young ones • Hawaiians were too busy cutting sandalwood, no one worked on fields=no food. Many Hawaiians died of starvation

  12. Notable Events While King • Whaling • Started 1819, replaced sandalwood trade • Hunting of whales brought many sailors, whalers and other foreigners • Businesses started to help the sailors (blacksmiths, carpenters etc.)

  13. Notable Events While King • Diseases • Foreigners brought many diseases that Hawaiians were not immune to • About half of the Hawaiians died of diseases such as measles, small px, veneral diseases

  14. Notable Events While King • Trip To London • Foreigners were constantly breaking laws and causing trouble • Decided to go to London to seek advice from King George IV in 1823 • Treated like royalty there

  15. Death • Both Liholiho and Kamamalu got the measles in London • Kamamalu died July 8, 1824 • Liholiho died July 14, 1824 • People did not find out until March 1825 about the deaths • Final resting place is at Mauna`ala in Nu`uanu • King form May 1819-July 1824, he was only 26 or 27 yrs. old
