Die regelmäßigen Verben. In German, we learn verbs in their infinitive forms. The infinitive form = to + action word. ex. to buy, to need, to take. In German, verb infinitives end in “en”. We do not use the verbs in their infinitive forms---we conjugate them.

  2. In German, we learn verbs in their infinitive forms. • The infinitive form = to + action word. ex. to buy, to need, to take

  3. In German, verb infinitives end in “en”. • We do not use the verbs in their infinitive forms---we conjugate them.

  4. There are 2 parts to every verb: the stem and the ending • The stem tells what activity is happening. • The ending tells who is doing the activity.

  5. Conjugation • 1. Drop “en” to form stem. • 2. Use stem and add the following endings. ich -e wir -en du -st ihr -t er sie sie -t Sie -en es (man)

  6. sagen sag ich sage wir sagen du sagst ihr sagt er sie sie sagt Sie sagen es man

  7. Du, ihr, and Sie can all be translated as “you”. • Du is you familiar—family and friends • Ihr is you plural—you all • Sie is you formal—for adults and strangers • Man is an indefinite pronoun meaning “one”.

  8. Irregularities • When a verb stem ends in –s, -ss, • -ß, -z, or –tz, the “s” in the second person singular is dropped. du sitzst du sitzt du setzst du setzt du heißst du heißt

  9. When the stem of a verb ends in –t or –d, an e is inserted between the stem and the ending in second and third person singular and second person plural. du antwortst du antwortest er antwortt er antwortet ihr antwortt ihr antwortet

  10. Verbs whose infinitives end in –ln • In the first person singular form, the “e” is dropped from the stem. lächeln ich lächle
