  2. What is containment? Containment- taking measures to prevent any extension of Communist rule to other countries WHY:-The Soviet Union has been attempting to spread Communism to the weak nations after WWII -The US believed it was their duty to help weak nations defend against communism because they were a democratic superpower Containment

  3. Truman Doctrine President Truman asked Congress for $400 million to aid Greece and Turkey in their defense against communism WHY: -Britain was helping these nations defend themselves against the Soviets but they couldn’t afford it anymore so they decided to ask the US to take over -Truman said that it was America’s duty to support people who wanted to be free from communist rule -The US needs to ensure that as nations rebuild, peace is a priority RESULT: The US was able to stop communist takeover in many nations

Marshall Plan Secretary of State George Marshall said that the US should aid European nations in what he called the European Recovery Programme WHY:-Western Europe was suffering from starvation, violence, and a bad economy -The US needs to be a leader in the war against poverty and chaos RESULT:-16 countries received $13 billion in aid -Western Europe began to flourish -There was no longer communist influences RESPONSE:-USSR is angry that the US is aiding the nations that they were trying to gain control of -Stalin decided to forbid any communist nations to apply for aid under the Marshall Plan, regardless of the nation’s economic state

North Atlantic Treaty Organization A military alliance created in 1949 between many western European nations in which they promised military support if any nation in the alliance was attacked WHY: -Berlin was being blocked by the Soviets, which increased fear of Soviet aggression -All nations needed help to defend themselves against the spread of communism, even though they were not at war RESULT:-The United States was officially involved with European nations -Defend against communism in significant nations

  6. WHO:-Belgium, Denmark, France, Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United States, Canada -Large nations support the small ones -1952- Greece and Turkey joined -1955- West Germany joined -1982- Spain joined

Warsaw Pact A military alliance created in 1955 between Communist Eastern European nations to coordinate defense against enemy attacks The USSR’s response to containment measures WHY:-Eastern nations were threatened by West Germany when they rearmed and joined NATO -Wanted to be able defend against this threat RESULT:-The USSR gained more power over the nations in the alliance -The USSR used the alliance as an excuse to to attack Hungary and Czechoslovakia WHO: Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and the Soviet Union
