Aims and Objectives of the MSc/PgD Scheme • Main objective of the Postgraduate Scheme in Computing • to provide professional IT education that suits the needs of students from different background and in different modes of learning. • As a result, students can pursue lifelong learning that best suits to their needs.

MSc / PgD in Software Technology (ST) This award aims to provide computing professionals with Computer Science or Computing academic background to pursue in-depth studies in software technologies. It specifically aims at:- • Providing up-to-date and in-depth knowledge in the fast software technology • Providing opportunities to specialize on major areas in ST • Developing the ability to assimilate and to apply acquired knowledge in software technology.

MSc / PgD in Information Technology (IT) This award serves as a bridging graduate program to allow professionals from engineering (non computing major) background to rapidly acquire fundamental and state of the art in IT to solve pragmatic business problems. It specifically aims at:- • Developing areas of study relevant to the student’s current profession or a profession s/he intends to engage in • Developing areas of study new to the student or in areas not directly related to his/her first degree • Providing an analytical in-depth study of an area already introduced at undergraduate level

  10. MSc / PgD in Information Systems (IS) This awards aims to provide management professionals with the necessary knowledge and skill in the application of IS within an organization. It specifically aims at:- • Identifying appropriate IT driven opportunities and incorporate these into the strategic thinking process • Developing a framework appropriate to the organizational culture to facilitate the alignment and interplay of organizational strategies with IS and EC strategies • Taking an active part in the decision making process surrounding the use and development of IS in the fast-changing economy

  11. MSc / PgD in E-Commerce (EC) This awards aims to educate a new generation of knowledge and technical personnel as well as business executives in EC. This award covers both the technology and management aspect of EC. It specifically aims at:- • Understanding of EC fundamentals particularly the enabling technologies • Understanding the necessary building tools of EC such as the EC platforms, EC security, EC payment, etc • Understanding the realities and potential of EC and to appreciate the potential and limitations of different types of technologies related to EC and Internet Computing

  20. Progression & Award • The student has not exceeded the maximum period of registration • The student’s GPA is not lower than 2.0 for three consecutive semesters • The minimum GPA values for graduation is 2.0 (equivalent to C grade)

  21. Grade Point Average • Where • n = number of all subjects taken by the student up to and including the latest semester, inclusive of failed subjects. • Note: Students may re-take the failed or low-grade subject and have the assessment updated afterward

Credit Transfer & Exemption (cont.) • Maximum credit transfer (50% in total) including • Block credit transfer (20%) • Due to previous postgraduate study of other disciplines • Credit transfer • ** Upto 6 credits due to relevant level-4 undergraduate study (refer to the given list earlier) • Others ** apply in general to COMP undergraduates who completed electives at level-4 or above at PolyU Note: Students who make subsequent claims for credit transfer from previous study at postgraduate level as well as at undergraduate level for the same award of study shall be subject to the discretion of COMP department.

(1) The credit transfer consideration is effective from 2007/08 for the newly admitted students (2) The total credit transfer under the consideration is upto 20% or 6 credits.
