  1. Manifest Destiny Manifest Destiny is the belief that Americans, or the “chosen people” by God, were to spread out from the Atlantic to the Pacific seaboard.

  2. Time of Manifest Destiny • First settlers of America through the early 1900’s. Inventor of Phrase Manifest Destiny • John O’Sullivan wrote an article on the annexation of Texas in 1845 and first coined the term Manifest Destiny.

  3. Native Americans and Manifest Destiny • From the time that Jamestown was established to 1934 when the Indian Reorganization Act was passed, Native Americans were being forced closer and closer to the Pacific. • Native Americans were viewed as savage and in need of civilization. • Americans took their land in promise of helping the Natives become civilized, but the only result was the natives losing their land and much of their culture. • Americans would stop at nothing to gain all the land that they could.

  4. Louisiana Purchase • United States bought the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. • Doubled the size of the country. • One step closer to the Pacific Ocean.

  5. John Quincy Adams • Adams negotiated a deal with Britain to extend the United States-Canadian border to the Rocky Mountains in 1818. • He also negotiated the joint occupation of the Oregon territory. • The Transcontinental Treaty of 1819 gave the United States a Spanish Florida. • Adams also helped formulate the Monroe Doctrine, stating that the Western Hemisphere was off limits to European expansion.

  6. Manifest Destiny In The Southwest • Past presidents had not known what to do with Texas, should it be annexed? • James K. Polk was elected in 1844 and saw the victory as a mandate for expansion. • Congress annexed Texas before Polk entered his presidential office. • But Polk was not happy that the annexation did not include land down to the Rio Grande River.

Texas-Polk-Mexico Issues • In June 1845 Polk moved troops to an area of disputed land between Texas and Mexico near the Nueces River. • Polk hoped to regain this territory from Mexico. • On November 10th, 1845, President Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to negotiate a deal for California and the disputed land. • Slidell was allowed to offer $25 Million, but he never got to negotiate with Mexican officials because the US was hated by many Mexicans.

Mexican-American War • Mexico grew angry and attacked the United States troops in the disputed territory in 1846. • By 1847, many Americans were shouting “All of Mexico.” • In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and brought peace to the Mexico and the United States. • United States gained what they had gone to war over.

  10. Gadsden Purchase in 1854. The United States wanted this piece of land so that the south could build a transcontinental railroad. United States once again took whatever land they wanted to. Gadsden Purchase

  11. Further Manifest Destiny • In 1898 President McKinley annexed the islands of Hawaii. • Also in 1898, the United States took control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippine Islands, and Guam in the Spanish- American War.
