  4. Our Mission Allen ISD Allen ISD cultivates innovation in education that empowers every learner to realize his or her full potential. GATE Academy Allen ISD provides options in gifted education while cultivating innovative extensions beyond the core learning to challenge and expand the uniqueness of the Gifted mind.

GATE Academy Timeline • March 26: parent informational meeting • March 26–April 5: lottery selection application window on GATE Academy website http://www.allenisd.org/gate • April 8: email confirmation receipt of application • week of April 8: selection of students by lottery • April 12: selection and waitlist notification • April 26: student acceptance and verification due

  6. GATE Academy Structure • school within a school at Vaughan Elementary • serves students in grades 1 through 6 • two classrooms per grade level • 276 total seats • grades 1 through 4 have 22 students per class • Grades 5 and 6 have 25 students per class

GATE Academy Learning Environment • opportunity to learn with like-minded peers • rigorous, integrated, engaging curriculum with imbedded extensions • focus on intellectual and social/emotional growth • technology integration • multimedia production & presentation • flexible learning space (movable desks, seating choices, & white board walls) • community presentation room

  8. How does the GATE Academy compare to AIM services?

  9. AIM Services pull-out services for identified gifted students specifically designed units focusing on humanities and STEAM extensions beyond the general education classroom and core curriculum

  10. AIM Services AIM services will remain at each campus (other than Vaughan). GATE students do not receive AIM services because they are in a classrooms designed for the specific needs of gifted students all day. consider what may be the best fit for your child and family

  12. GATE classrooms reflect the world for which we are preparing our students. If we are asking students to create, innovate, and be prepared beyond the classroom, our classrooms must reflect creativity, innovation, and preparation for the future.

Technology Integration • one-to-one technology in the classrooms with laptops, I-pads, and Chromebooks • Google classroom, online portfolios, Nepris, Thrively, Wonderopolis, Flipgrid, and many other websites and applications • robotics including Mindstorms, Spheros, Ollies, and Ozobots • multimedia production • MakerSpaces • presentation room for speakers, student performances, and project showcases

Lottery Selection Process • commitment letters from current students • GATE Academy application • lottery selection (each spring where seats are available) • rising 1st graders (seats factored per campus ) • students grades 2-6 are selected at large for available seats • remaining applicants are waitlisted for 2019-2020 school year • The wait list is built from applications, so you are encouraged to apply even if seats are not currently available.

Eligibility currently identified gifted students Grades 1st – 5th may apply for any open GATE Academy seats newly identified (spring 2019) gifted kindergarten students may apply for open GATE Academy seats students who apply and are selected via lottery continue at GATE Academy through 6th grade Application submission does not guarantee a seat at GATE Academy.

GT Students at Vaughan • GATE Academy is the gifted service venue at Vaughan Elementary • no AIM services at Vaughan • open 2019-2020 GATE Academy seats are offered to current K-5 identified gifted students at Vaughan • Gifted services for students not attending GATE Academy are provided through differentiation in the general classroom

Lottery Process for Rising 1st Graders • Notification of identification mailed February 26, 2019. • Newly-identified kindergarten students may apply for the 2019-2020 GATE Academy selection lottery. • Students who apply and are selected via lottery continue at GATE Academy through 6th grade (no reapplication each year).

Lottery Process for Rising 1st Graders • For rising 2019-2020 1st graders only, the number of open GATE Academy seats is based on campus percentage of the total Allen ISD GT current kindergarten gifted population. • between one and four seatsinitially open to each campus • open 2019-2020 GATE Academy seats are offered to current identified Vaughan kindergarteners Above graph is for sample purposes only. GATE Academy Waitlist • Students not currently attending GATE Academy must reapply each year to be a part of the lottery selection. • Students who applied, but were not selected, for 2018-2019 are granted one additional lottery selection chance • Students who have applied multiple times are granted additional chances equal to number of previous applications • Any student not selected to attend GATE Academy is placed on a waitlist for 2019-2020. • Should a 2019-2020 vacancy occur after the lottery selection, Advanced Academics will contact the student selected for the next available seat.

  23. Life at Vaughan Elementary Vaughan students have fun making friends while exploring and developing their own interests. National Math Club (grade 6 only) Drama Kids Writing Club Vaughan Environmental Club STEAM club Robotics (grades 5 & 6 only) Art Quest Chess Club Fun Run Club Vaughan Cares Club U.I.L. Destination Imagination GATE Academy students may participate in Kids Club at Vaughan Elementary or at their neighborhood school.

GATE Academy Bus Transportation • bus transportation provided to/from GATE Academy • designate bus transportation on GATE Academy application • within two mile radius of home campus: pick up at campus as early as 6:40 am • outside two mile radius of home campus: pick up at bus stop as early as 6:40 am • Drop off as late as 3:45 pm • times affected by ridership and/or distance from GATE Academy • updates to follow from Allen ISD Transportation

  25. Next Steps • Upon verification of acceptance to the GATE Academy • school supplies • cafeteria accounts • GATE Academy welcome reception May 16, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at Vaughan Elementary

Application Process Review • March 26-April 5: application available on district Gifted and Talented Services website • Please use Safari or Google Chrome • Application will not be submitted until you hit “done.” • Print a copy of the application for your records. • No additional applications accepted after April 5 at midnight • April 8: email sent to confirm receipt of application • week of April 8: GATE Academy lottery selection • April 12: GATE Academy Student notification of selection or wait list mailed • April 26: GATE Academy acceptance verification due by close of business • unverified seats are considered open • waitlisted students contacted in order
