  1. The Appalachian Math and Science Partnership (AMSP) is a Five Year Project Supported by the National Science Foundation

  2. The partnership includes 9 colleges and universities and 51 school districts in KY., TN. and VA.

  3. AMSP supports many activities designed to strengthen K-16 science and mathematics education in the region.

  4. AMSP activities can be organized under four lines of investment including: • Inservice Teacher Enhancement • Preservice Teacher Enhancement • School Improvement • Research and Evaluation

  5. This institute is one of 18 in mathematics and science being offered this summer as inservice teacher enhancement activities.

  6. Please be sure to sign in each day on a sheet to be provided. Processing of travel and stipend forms will be explained and handled by a Regional Coordinator.

  7. The Regional Coordinators and science institute responsibilities are: • Judy Compton (UVa, Wise)jcc8m@uvawise.edu • Debbie Owens (UK/EKU) Debbie.owens@uky.edu • Kathy Strunk (UT) kstrunk@utk.edu • Robin McDonald (MSU) r.mcdonald@morehead-st.edu

  8. Hands-on investigations and interpretive discussion will be the dominant types of activities during the institute. Your enthusiastic participation every day is needed!

  9. A group of higher education faculty and classroom teachers have been working over the past nine months to plan and prepare for this institute.

  10. Your instructional facilitators include one or more higher education faculty and classroom teachers.

  11. The stipend is $100 for each full day of participation. Meals, snacks and travel reimbursement are provided.

  12. Evaluation of our activities is required by NSF.

  13. A major goal of AMSP is to improve K-12 mathematics and science achievement. To this end implementation in your classrooms and participation in the mentored implementation program in 2005-2006 are required.

  14. All participants must have classrooms to implement during 2005-2006 and be committed to do so.

  15. AMSP will provide each teacher with materials and support for implementation.

  16. You will be able to adapt many institute activities for inclusion into your instruction. Some institute activities will be just for you. Obviously you make the decision for your classroom.

  17. More information on the peer mentoring program to support implementation will be provided later in the institute.

  18. You are partners and AMSP can’t succeed without your contribution. We look forward to working with you this summer and beyond! ENJOY!
