  1. Today,we are going to examine the formation of the Articles of Confederation Essential Question: What did the Articles of Confederation fail? Learning Goal: Students will be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of the Articles of Confederation.

  2. YEA!! WE ARE FREE FROM ENGLAND!! WE ARE INDEPENDENT!!

  3. What do we do now?

  4. From 1776-1787 the US was run by the first constitution; THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION. • 11 YEARS

  5. After the Declaration of Independence… • Each of the colonies became some what like independent nations • Each colony was free to have their own constitution and government • There was lots of jealousy between the colonies

  6. After the Declaration of Independence… • Each state was responsible for its own defense • Therefore, as a country, the US was militarily weak • How will the country provide defense, and not give up any of the newly achieved freedom?

  7. After much negotiation…. • The former colonies agreed to give a small amount of power to a central government (the federal government) • This is a way to represent all the states in the country • The states had most of the power (Confederal system of government) • And they signed a new document….

  8. What is it? • It is The Articles of Confederation (1781). • What is that? • It is the first document to set up a central government for the United States. • How does it work? • Congressis set up with representatives from each state. • Why did this happen? • The new nation needed a government to organize their national issues.

  9. Under the Articles of Confederation… • There was a weak national government. • This was done on purpose, because people were afraid from their experiences with the British monarchy and Parliament. • The states had power to make its own laws (state sovereignty). • Therefore, one state could have different laws than another state. • Examples: taxation and law enforcement

  10. What were some of the Articles strengths? • It successfully won a war against Great Britain • It negotiated a Peace Treaty, or a deal, with France • It made all states recognize the laws of the other states. (Example: Marriage was valid everywhere)

  11. What were some of the Articles strengths? Passed the Northwest Ordinance (1787) • The best thing out of the Articles of Confederation • It allowed Manifest destiny to occur; the USA to grow! • For Native Americans and Mexicans its probably not a good thing

  12. What were some of the Articles strengths? Passed the Northwest Ordinance (1787) • Described how the Northwest Territory including Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, & Wisconsin would be governed • Problem with this was who had rights to the land claim?

  13. Now, let’s examine the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. The bad that handicaps the USA from moving forward United States of America Articles of Confederation

  14. The states during this period (1783-1787) were held together by a rope of sand. - George Washington

  15. Why were the Articles of Confederation weak? Different Currencies • Each state had its own money system. • Shops stopped accepting money from outside of their own state, causing a lot of money to become worthless.

  16. Why did the Articles of Confederation fail? No Taxation • Congress could not tax the people and had no way to raise money. • Therefore, the U.S. was unable to pay its debts!

  17. Money owed to other countries for loans made during the war $12 million Americans who supplied food, horses, & supplies to aid the war $40 million (national) $25 million (state) The remainder was in promissory notes to soldiers, farmers, and merchants

  18. Why did the Articles of Confederation fail? Interstate Commerce • Congress had no power to regulate trade between the states. • Each state was free to charge as much taxes on products as it wanted to between the states. • Therefore, the states started to argue because there was no system in place to even out the taxes. $5 $10

  19. Why did the Articles of Confederation fail? No National Court • The nation lacked a national court system. • The states could not go to a higher court to settle problems. Supreme Court

  20. Why did the Articles of Confederation fail? No Executive • The nation did not have a President, or Chief Executive. • If a country wants to make a deal, there are too many people to work with. White House

  21. Why did the Articles of Confederation fail? Power to Veto Amendments • Congress had one house. (unicameral) • Laws were difficult to pass, needing the approval of nine states. • One state could stop an amendment from becoming a law. Capitol Building
