Pitt County Demographics • Race/Ethnicity • 58.9 % White • 34.1% African Americans • 5.5% Hispanic or Latino origin • Poverty • 25.5 % live below poverty level • Fewer than one in four Pitt County adults eat the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily • More than one in four Pitt County adults eat fast foods four or more times per week • Greenville is ranked #1 among United states cities with fast food density.

Healthy Corner Store Benefits • Accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables for underserved populations located in food deserts throughout Pitt County • Support local farmers • Nutrition Education/Taste Testing for customers • Provides community support to the stores • Economic improvements • Building partnerships with owners and farmers

  4. Pilot Corner Store Benefits • Pilot Store Owner is an advocate model for other store owners • Developing strategies and assessment tools • To be used for other stores • Modify strategies and/or assessments

Partners in Steering Committee • Corner Store Owners • Local Farmer Representative • East Carolina University • North Carolina Department Agriculture (NCDA) Assistant Marketing Director • Active Living By Design • Logistics of Steering Committee • Meets periodically to discuss any challenges or successes.

Sustaining Fresh Food in Corner Stores • Looking at policies to encourage more stores to have fresh foods • Zoning Economic • Development (providing incentives to the store owners) • Work with City Council on public safety near corner stores • Expanding Steering Committee to Role • Building Community Involvement • Connecting Community Gardens to this process
