  1. Student leads Staar vs. taks test

  2. Graduation requirements • To graduate students must meet the requirements in two areas • Credits- students must earn credits (by passing classes) • Tests- students must meet standard on state exams

  3. Graduation requirements • Students can earn 3 types of diplomas in the state of Texas: • Minimum • Recommended • Distinguished • We will discuss these options and requirements in the future

  4. Taks test (CURRENT JUNIORS AND SENIORS) • 10 (grade level) based tests • The test a student is administered depends on the grade level the student is classified in during testing • 9th grade TAKS –Math & ELA • 10TH grade TAKS- Math, Science, Social Studies & ELA • 11th grade TAKS –Math Science, Social Studies & ELA

  5. Taks test (CURRENT JUNIORS AND SENIORS) • To graduate, student must pass 4 of these exams (exit level) • Students retest until passing standard is met for all 4 exams (beginning the followins summer) • TAKS has no effect on a student’s report card, GPA, or whether or not that student earns credit for a class

  6. Issues with TAKS • TAKS test is not aligned with curriculum • A student was tested based on their grade level (regardless of what class the student is taking) • Ex. 9th grade TAKS is half 8th grade and half algebra. The test is not a fair assessment of a freshman taking Geometry.

  7. Staar test (CURRENT freshmen and sophomores) • 15 subject based tests • The test a student is administered depends on the class they are taking • Math- Algebra 1, Geometry & Algebra II • Science- Biology-Chemistry & Physics • Social Studies- World Geography, World History & US History • ELA- Has two parts (Reading and Writing) • English I, English II & English III • Writing I, Writing II, & Writing III

  8. Staar test (CURRENT freshmen and sophomores) • To graduate a student must: • meet standard on all 15 tests • 3 math test scores must add up to 10500 • 3 science test scores must add up to 10500 • 3 social studies scores tests must add up to 10500 • 3 reading test scores must add up to 5250 • 3 writing test scores must add up to 5250 • Retest 15 exams if necessary until passing standard is met (beginning the following summer)

  9. TAKS VS. STAAR • TAKS – unlimited time • STAAR- 4 hours

  10. Staar • STAAR will focus on “clearer, fewer, and deeper”. • Provide a more clearly articulated assessment program • Focus on fewer skills • Address skills in a deeper manner

  11. staar • There are two types of objectives • Readiness standards • Determinant of college readiness • Supporting standards • Narrow focus • These documents are posted on the TEA student assessment website at • http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/staar/

  12. staar • Most objectives are Supporting standards but STAAR test is mostly made up of Readiness standards

  13. Taks scores vsstaar scores • STAAR • Level 1 • Level 2 • Level 3 • TAKS • Did not meet standard • Met standard • Commended Performance

  14. Staar performance • A common misconception is that meeting Level 1 means a student passed • This is not the case. Level 1 means a student failed exam.

  15. Staar scores • Recall earlier we said all exams in one subject must add up to a certain number. The minimum score just says your failing score is good enough to count toward that sum. It also means you are very close to meeting level 2.

  16. staar • A student’s performance on STAAR exam will affect a student’s report card, GPA and whether or not a student earns credit for the class they are taking (passes)

  17. To do- taks (SENIORS ONLY) • If you have passed all 4 parts, exhale • If you have not met the standard on any of these 4 exams retest will take place in October • Make sure you are attending tutorials to ensure you pass during the next administration and can rest assured you will graduate with your class

  18. To do- taks (juniors ONLY) • Look over your test scores for 9th and 10th grade. If you have not met the standard on any of these exams, this is an indicator you may need some type of intervention to ensure you pass during the first administration • You will test in the Spring. Make sure you are paying attention in your core classes! • Make en effort to pass first time around

  19. To do- staar(sophomores ONLY) • Look over your test scores for 9th grade first administration (and summer if you retested) • (Some students took Alg1 or Geo and some took Biology or Chemistry, all students took World Geography and English I last year) • Retest for these exams is December • If you did not meet level 2 you will retest in December

  20. To do- staar(Freshmen ONLY) • You will take 5 STAAR exams in the spring. The tests you take depend on which classes you are currently taking • You must pass all of these to graduate • If you do not pass all parts you will begin retesting the following summer • If you do not pass it WILL bring your GPA down and MAY cause you to fail a course (you will have to repeat the class)
