  1. The Future is now... With JVC´s new 46“ 3D display GD-463D10 3 D

  2. History of 3D (stereoscopic) contents • 1858 World’s first three-dimensional image (still picture) was shown: • 1895 Motion pictures are invented: The Lumière brothers of France (Auguste and Louis) • Premiere of the first 3D movie: The first 3D movie featuring the anaglyph process, “The Power of Love”, • 1952 – 1954 The first 3D cinema boom: As the number of movie-goers declined with the growing popularity of television, • 1981 – 1984 The second wave of 3D cinema: Many directors start to actively produce 3D movies again when CATV channels begin to broadcast 3D programs.

  3. 3D is back now .. The Nightmare Before Christmas Released in 2006. • Hollywood box office declines, home theater advances • Celebrated film directors start to create 3D moviesCelebrated film directors such as George Lucas, Robert Zemeckis, James Cameron, etc. enthusiastically began to get involved with 3D movies after a symposium was held • 2D to 3D film conversion system improvementsTechnology to convert conventional 2D film to 3D has improved significantly and this has lead to the re-release of past 3D hits. One of the reasons for this is the increasingly powerful role computer graphics plays in the filmmaking process. Star Wars Episode III and Episode IV Under study; test versions already released. Toy Story 1 and 2 To be released October 2009 in the US.

  4. Existing 3D technologies (TV display) • Existing 3D technologies (TV display) Passive Mode Active Mode (shutter)

  5. Existing 3D technologies (TV display) • Existing 3D technologies (TV display) Nacked Eye Active Mode (shutter)

  6. Existing 3D technologies (TV display) • Existing 3D technologies (TV display) JVC Passive Xpol system: 3D optical filter is applied to the display surface and the viewer wears polarizing glasses. Images are displayed from top to bottom with alternative lines assigned to left and right eyes. In most cases, contentisrecorded in side-by-side format to a recorder, and the TV or conversion box recreates the picture by stretching and interleaving the left and right lines. • Full-color display • Flicker-free • Polarizing glasses are cheap • No need to change BD or broadcasting formats

  7. Xpol method implemented by JVC • Use of polarizing filter for 3D images with array of micro polarizing elements • Horizontal InterleavingIn order to display 3D images on an Xpol 3D display, the pixels for left and right eyes are assigned alternately to odd and even lines, respectively, in a process called “horizontal interleaving.” • Polarizing glassesPolarizing glasses are used to watch in 3D. Circular polarizing filters are superior in that one can tilt one’s head slightly to left or right and still enjoy the 3D effect. • Importance of correct eyelevelWith the Xpol technology one must pay attention to the viewer’s eyelevel (vertical position), as the wrong height can result in the left and right pixels reversing, and in a similar reversal of the sense of depth. • High picture quality 3D display with eye-friendly polarizing technology (1) easy to implement; (2) easy on the eyes; (3) better picture quality compared to naked-eye 3D technology; (4) excellent in terms of color reproduction; and (5) enables the LCD to be used at any time for normal 2D display.

  8. Several different methods of recording 3D video, supported by GD-463D10 • Side-by-Side (method used by Japan’s BS11 satellite channel) • May be standardized by the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) • Can be transmitted using existing bandwidth • Line-by-Line • Method adopted by Arisawa

  10. Advantage of GD-463D10 JVC 46“ LCD 3D Display • High-resolution picture quality. • Sharp images with accurate line interlacing. • 3D images created by circular polarized light are easy on the eyes: LCD panel with Xpol glass filter (manufactured by Arisawa) • Horizontal interleaving polarization method: Complements the side-by-side format and converts to line interlace (line-by-line). • Compatible with diverse power sources for worldwide applications (power plug will differ depending on the region). • Well received by reviewers as this model using the Xpol method was ranked high in picture quality at the CES 2009.
