  1. “Three Essential Ingredients”2 John02/11/2007Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. “Three Essential Ingredients” • Unlike 1 John, this brief letter is not a theological treatise but a reply to problems within the church. • John’s main themes love and truth are used to support practical advice on Christian living.

  3. “Three Essential Ingredients” • To Be Effective, a Sincere Truth Must Be Experienced. • The power of truth. 1The elder, To the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in the truth-and not I only, but also all who know the truth- (2 John 1, NIV)

  4. “Three Essential Ingredients” • The truth is so powerful that it can bring “all who know the truth” together on common ground. • It is that truth that brings us together.

  5. “Three Essential Ingredients” • The permanency of truth. 2because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: (2 John 2, NIV)

  6. “Three Essential Ingredients” • Jesus is Living Truth. • The Bible is the written Truth. • The Truth will never change, nor will it be destroyed. • Once we have the Truth...we have it forever!

  7. “Three Essential Ingredients” • The product of truth. 3Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love. (2 John 1:3, NIV) • Grace...God’s unmerited favor. • Mercy...mercy allows us to be forgiven. • Peace...the result of grace and mercy.

  8. “Three Essential Ingredients” • The practice of truth. 4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. (2 John 1:4, NIV) • When we receive the truth, we then should live the truth. • Truth must be experienced in our lives.

  9. “Three Essential Ingredients” • To Be Effective, Spiritual Love Must Be Expressed. 5And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. (2 John 5, NIV)

  10. “Three Essential Ingredients” 6And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. (2 John 6, NIV)

  11. “Three Essential Ingredients” • Love is very powerful. • Love moved the Father to send the Son. • Love moved the Son to save the sinner. • Love moves the saint to serve the Savior. • Love is very personal

  12. “Three Essential Ingredients” 5And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. (2 John 5) • As believers, we may not always agree. • But we must always love each other.

  13. “Three Essential Ingredients” • Love is very practical. • It’s not a new commandment. • It’s not a forced commandment

  14. “Three Essential Ingredients” • To Be Effective, Sound Doctrine Must Be Established. • No Christian can be stable without sound doctrine.

  15. “Three Essential Ingredients” • 42% of Americans think Jesus committed sins. • 25% of professing Christians say he was not sinless. • 61% of Americans think there are other ways to salvation besides faith in Christ.

  16. “Three Essential Ingredients” • The importance of sound doctrine told. • It’s important because of the deceivers we face. 7Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh; such is the deceitful one and the antichrist. (2 John 7, NAB).

  17. “Three Essential Ingredients” • It’s important because of the dangers that could follow. 8Look to yourselves that you do not lose what we worked for but may receive a full recompense. (2 John 8, NAB)

  18. “Three Essential Ingredients” • The instruction in sound doctrine taught. 11for whoever greets him shares in his evil works. (2 John 7-11, NAB)

  19. “Three Essential Ingredients” • He teaches how to tell deceivers. 9Anyone who is so “progressive” as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son. (2 John 9, NAB)

  20. “Three Essential Ingredients” • He teaches how to treat deceivers. 10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him in your house or even greet him; (2 John 10, NAB)

  21. “Three Essential Ingredients” Conclusion • For us to be effective as a local church we need to make sure that these three essentials are right. • If we want to be effective in the Christian Life, we need to remember these three things that are essential as well. Truth, Love, and Doctrine
