  2. Commentary on Hebrews 5:1 • What is a Priest? • Latin word for priest is “Pontifex” = bridge builder • A priest in the Old Testament is an advocate, mediator or representative that builds a bridge between people & God. • A priest offers gifts and sacrifices for sin.

  3. Commentary on Hebrews 5:1 1 Chr 6:48-49 “Their fellow Levites were assigned to all the other duties of the tabernacle, the house of God. But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.”

Commentary on Hebrews 5:5-6 Gen 14:17-20 “After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.”
