  2. Seven Billion: How Did We Get So Big? Why do you think the population has recently started to grow so quickly? What are some reasons people are living longer? What makes an area good for people to live and survive there?

  3. Let’s define POPULATION Why is the population always changing? • Population is the totalnumber of people who live in a specific place. • The population of the world is constantly changingbecause people are constantly being born & dying. • Births= Birth rate • Deaths= Death Rate

  4. Population Density What does population density show? • Population density shows theaverageof how many people live per sq. mile in an area. • Population density will be higher when the population in the area ishigherand the amount of land issmaller

  5. Three Types of communities Which type of community has the largest population? TYPE 1: RURAL • Large amount of land • Small POPULATION (LESS PEOPLE) • Farms TYPE 2: SUBURBAN • Mediumamount of land • Medium POPULATION • Neighborhoods TYPE 3: URBAN • Small amount of land • Large POPULATION • Skyscrapers & apartment buildings

Impact of Population Growth What is ONE impact of population growth? • The world’s population has been increasing rapidly over the last century (100 years). • CHALLENGES DUE TO RAPID INCREASE: As the population increases it becomes difficult to provide the basic needs • food, clean water, shelter • OVERCROWDING: Many people move to the cities to make a better life for themselves, but then people are fighting each other for resources they need to survive.

Let’s define MIGRATION What would cause someone to migrate? • Migration • Is The process of people relocating to a new region [could be for positive or negative reasons] • Geographers study 3 things when analyzing Migration: • What causes migration? • Which places have more push factors? • Which places have more pull factors?

  10. PEOPLE WHO MIGRATE What is a refugee? IMMIGRANT • a person who comes to live permanently in another country. • [I=IN] EMIGRANT • A person who leaves their own country i to live in another country. • [E=EXIT] REFUGEE • A person who leaves their own country in order to settle permanently live in another because their country is not safe.

WHY DO PEOPLE MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE What is the difference between a PUSH and PULL factor? • REASONS FOR MIGRATING • Push- Pull Factors. • These can be Environmental, economic, cultural, or political. • Push Factors: • NEGATIVE • Causes people to LEAVE an area→ WAR • Pull Factors: • POSITIVE • ATTRACTS people to COME to an area→ SAFETY

ENVIRONMENTAL [LAND] PUSH FACTOR • UNSTABLE WEATHER • RISK OF NATURAL DISASTERS (Hurricanes, drought, etc) ECONOMIC [$] PUSH FACTOR • HIGH UNEMPLOYMENT → NOT ENOUGH JOBS FOR all PEOPLE • POVERTY → NO MONEY = HIGHER CRIME AREAS CULTURAL [RELIGION] PUSH FACTOR • LIMITED PERSONAL FREEDOM→ RELIGION • SLAVERY→ UNFAIR SOCIAL CLASSES POLITICAL [GOVERNMENT] PUSH FACTOR • UNSTABLE GOVERNMENT → WAR • NO PROTECTION

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF MIGRATION Why do you think migration is positive for the USA? • CULTURAL • Adds diversity [NOT EVERYONE IS THE SAME] • new traditions, food, religions are spread to the area • ECONOMIC (Money) • Brings in workers with different skills • POLITICAL • Contributions that lead to citizenship

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF MIGRATION What negative effects can discrimination of immigrants have on a country? • CULTURAL • Discrimination due differences and not understanding others. • ECONOMIC • Jobs are harder to find with more competition • POLITICAL • Immigrants are viewed as unwanted or dangerous, so they are treated badly
