  1. MONKEYPOX OUTBREAK: SYMPTOMS IN HUMANS & TREATMENTS

  2. WHAT IS MONKEYPOX? Monkeypox is defined as an infection that is infected in human body by a virus known as the Monkeypox virus. This virus belongs to a category genus known as Orthopoxvirus which is closely related to the Variola virus, which is known to be responsible for causing Smallpox. The majority of the infections that are caused by the Monkeypox happened in the areas where the virus is in its endemic stage, which includes various nations of Central and West Africa. WHAT CAUSES MONKEYPOX? Monkeypox is such a virus that is transmitted from fauna to human beings, known as a viral zoonosis having indications same as the ones seen earlier in patients suffering from small pox. This is to be noted that the symptoms appearing are less serious in nature medically. This is caused by the Monkeypox virus that is classified in the cluster of the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family. HOW IS MONKEYPOX TRANSMITTED? The maximum chances of getting affected with the virus is when a person comes in direct contact with a case of a confirmed monkeypox, froth or a surface and object that are contaminated. The highest chances for transmission are considered to be starting from the commencement of the early indications until lesions get covered with hard crusty skin (scabbed over) and those scabs have decayed. 3. WHAT ARE THE MONKEYPOX SYMPTOMS? The symptoms of Monkeypox that will be seen initially are as follows- • High temperature • Pain in the body • Feeling tired This disease is very akin to the smallpox but is considered to be less dangerous. As a result of this disease a patient can experience rash that may lead to red bumps on the skin. WHERE IS MONKEYPOX FOUND IN THE HUMAN BODY? Typically, your face will get affected first then other parts of your body will start to get affected gradually. But this virus can commence in other parts of the body as well. 4. WHAT IS THE CURE OF MONKEYPOX? Monkeypox belongs to the group of the Orthopoxvirus genus of viruses, comprising of smallpox. Fortunately, due to a thing which is known as cross-protection, smallpox vaccines also work effectively for monkeypox. You will get 2 varieties of vaccines for the smallpox. A kind of vaccine of smallpox which is an older one consists of the “live” vaccinia virus. The original one in this cluster is ACAM2000. In US, it has received approval for giving protection to the people against smallpox disease. Although ACAM2000 cannot lead to smallpox, the vaccinia virus it contains can duplicate after the vaccine is administered, spreading from the person who has received the vaccination to a person without the vaccination coming in close contact with the site of the injection administration or any fluid leaking from the site for up to following 21 days. This also depicts that ACAM2000 can lead to several side effects and should be restricted to be given to the groups with high risk factors, like- women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and people who have compromised immune systems. Patients who have a weak immune system, those affected with HIV, may fall very sick from this immunization. 5. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MONKEYPOX?
