  2. Background Information • Ernst was born on October 4, 1903 in Ried, Austria. • He studied law, and he obtained a law degree in 1926.

  3. Early nazi life • Ernst Kaltenbrunner joined the Austrian Nazi Party in 1932. • In 1934, he became the head of the Austrian SS. • Due to his Nazi views, he was jailed in January of 1934. * In his second position, he controlled the Gestapo, Criminal Police, and Security Service.

  4. On September 11, 1938, he was promoted to SS Gruppenfuehrer by Adolph Hitler. • He became the Chief of the Security Police and SD in January 1943. • Later, he was rewarded for his work by Hitler by receiving the Knight’s Cross of the War Merit, Cross with Swords.

  5. After the attack on Hitler on July 20, 1944, he gained direct access to the Fuhrer. • In the last years of the war, he was a large figure in the “Final Solution”.

  6. The Capture of Kaltenbrunner • On May 15, 1945, American troops captured Ernst after his escape to South Germany. • He was tried and found guilty on counts 3 and 4, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death.

  8. Hanging • Kaltenbrunner was hanged on October 16, 1946.
