  1. Ontology : the challenging tool for Web based Information Retrieval System TulimaDey And MdAjimuddinSk tulima73@yahoo.co.in

  2. What is Information retrieval • Information retrieval deals with access to information as well as its presentation, storage and organization • Information retrieval process is to retrieve the information relevant to a given request.

  3. What is Ontology? • Ontology is a formal, explicit specification of a shared conceptualization of a domain of interest. Where conceptualization is an abstract, simplified view of the world that we wish to represent for some purpose. • Ontology has set out to overcome the problem of implicit and hidden knowledge by making the conceptualization of a domain explicit. Any knowledge – based system or any knowledge- level agent is liable to some conceptualization, explicitly or implicitly.

  4. TYPES OF ONTOLOGY • Domain ontology : Domain specific ontology ( Domain ontology)is a specific domain model which represents parts of the world. • Upper ontology: An upper ontology is a model for the common objects, applicable to larger scale of domain ontologies.

  5. ONTOLOGY LANGUAGES: • OWL ( Web Ontology Language ) : created on the base of RDF ( Resource Description Framework) and have a capabilities to define more sophisticated semantics. The three sub languages of OWL are OWL Lite OWL Full OWL DL

  6. ONTOLOGY LANGUAGES: • OIL (Ontology Inference Layer)is a language which describing term meaning on semantics. • SHOE ( Simple HTML Ontology Extensions) it is used for extension of HTML tags for incorporating semantic knowledge into documents.

  7. ONTOLOGY LANGUAGES: • OML ( Ontology Markup Languages) and CKML ( Conceptual Knowledge Markup Languages)developed SHOE to XML with conceptual Graphs. • DOGMA ( Developing Ontology ) : adopts the fact –oriented model with higher level of semantic stability.

  8. CHARACTERISTICS OF ONTOLOGY • A well defined syntax – necessary for machine processing of information. • A formal semantics-a pre-requisite for reasoning support: it formally specifies class membership, equivalence of classes, consistency and classification. • Convenience of expression • Efficient reasoning support • Sufficient expressive power.

  9. Features of ontology • Provides a controlled vocabulary • Supports site organization and management. • Supports expectation setting • May be used to support sense disambiguation • May be used for consistency checking • May be used to augment the information obtained by the user/ application • Provides support for interoperability among systems by using shared vocabulary • May be used to support validation and verification of data.

  10. Semantic web and ontology • Semantic web support multidimensional searching through rich domain ontology. • Unlike conventional web site, semantic web allow for bottom –up evolution and decentralized updates. • Information structure id controlled by an ontology and is machine processable. • It is possible to have multiple aggregations and views of the same data. • Data can be published in reusable forms for incorporation in multiple portals.
