  1. ‘Near-death’ Experiences ‘Belief in the soul is just wishful thinking’. Discuss. Tony Barrett and Annabel Thorn

  2. What is it? • ‘Near-death’ experiences – the process where someone is technically & clinically ‘dead’, but is able to be resuscitated and comes ‘back to life’. • Due to advances in modern technology, this has been increasingly a more common occurrence. • Many of the patients who were clinically ‘dead’ experienced outer-body, supernatural sensations and phenomena. • To some, this is evidence indicating that there is an aspect of our identity and existence that is more than the physical, worldly that we are accustomed to. • There is something more abstract and spiritual – soul?

  3. Dr. Raymond Moody • Dr Raymond Moody noticed that those who had been clinically ‘dead’ had experienced similar things whilst they were ‘dead’. • As there were common features evident, Moody saw the phenomena as more than a coincidence. Such key features were…

  4. Click to Add Title • The ‘dead’ did not suffer from pain but experienced bliss and peace through a feeling of floating outside of the body. • Through floating, their movements were unrestricted and could travel through walls. • There emerged a tunnel with a bright light and loved ones waiting at the end for them in a paradise beyond the light, feeling the presence of a divine being. • The ‘dead’ would see how their actions have an effect on others through seeing a panoramic view of their lives from birth until death. • Finally they are told (possibly by God!?) that it’s not their time to die and return to the world of the living.

  5. Evidence for Near Death Experiences • There have been reports of group NDEs, where people en masse experience identical phenomena. • A third of all people who are clinically dead but return to life claim to have had a NDE. Too high a fraction to discount? • The effects of the NDE of the individual’s life is often too strong and influential to discount and ignore. People may revise their thoughts on God, change jobs, undergo a notable shift in personality, etc. • SYNOPTIC LINK  - Richard Swinburne’s Principle of Testimony (looked at last year for the Religious Experience module) – the onus is on the critics and doubters to disprove the testimonies of those who have claimed to have had NDE, not on the individuals to prove the validity of their claims.
