  17. Aqueduct construction • Aqueduct construction, shown here, was one of the peacetime activities of the Roman army. Roman aqueducts carried water long distances from rivers and mountain springs. The water ran in a channel along the top of an aqueduct. Roman soldiers also built roads, bridges, tunnels, and walls.
