  1. Hunter - gatherer People who survived by searching for wild plants and animals to eat.

  5. Pictographs • – pictures drawn or painted on cave walls, ledges & cliffs.

  6. Petroglyphs • – carvings made in rocks.

  7. – mixture of animal fat and berries used to preserve meat. PEMMICAN

  8. Atlatl • – a hand held spear thrower.

  9. Band • two or more extended families.

  10. Extended families • – parents, their children & all the parents’ grandchildren.

  11. Tribe • – a number of bands who followed the same leader and shared the same culture& territory.

  12. Confederacies • – alliances of people or groups that unite for a common purpose

  13. Tipis • – cone shaped tent made of poles covered in animal skins.

  14. Hereditary • Hereditary – passed from parent to child.

  15. Nomads • – people who wander from place to place in search of food.

  16. Allies • Allies – people who help each other to benefit them both.

  17. Adobe • Adobe - mix of wet clay & straw that is made into bricks and dried in the sun.

  18. Kiva • – large room used for meetings & religious ceremonies.

  19. Missionaries • – person sent to a place to convert people to a new religion.

  20. Reservations • – land set aside by the government for use by Indian peoples.
