  1. They were known as the “People of the Sea” for their skills as pirates and traders. Etruscan women could attend and participate in activities and festivals. Etruscan farmers used mostly iron tools to grow wheat, barley, grapes and other fruits. The Etruscan people especially loved music and dancing. They built temples with wood, mud brick, and clay on stone foundations. Soothsayers read certain types of omens of what might happen in life. When a Etruscan noble died, their slaves would have a fight to the death. The Etruscans enjoyed bright colors, along with gambling, board games , and sports. The Etruscan wealthy people owned most enslaved people, who tended the land and did other work. They borrowed from the Greek alphabet and spoke a language different from any other in the ancient world. The dead was buried in tombs beneath the ground called catacombs. Their shoes in the army gave them a better footing on rough or hilly ground. The lyre accompanied most of the Etruscans activities and festivals. The Etruscan people dug tunnels and built dams to drain the fields and built cities on hilltops surrounded by thick walls. The Etruscans gambled with ivory dice or played games similar to chess and backgammon.
