Loyalist Religious Views: Christian Profile Photo of Benedict Personal History Activities: Benedict Arnold served as a commander in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He achieved the rank of general, but later defected to the British Army after being passed over for a promotion. While fighting for the Americans, Benedict Arnold played an important role in the rebel capture of Fort Ticonderoga. He also fought at the battle of Saratoga, where he was wounded in combat. Continental Congress neglected to promote Arnold in spite of his successes. This angered Arnold and in 1779 he began plotting to defect to the British. In 1780, Benedict Arnold asked for and received the command of the fort at West Point, New York. He planned to turn it over to British troops. Arnold’s plan was discovered when John André, a major in the British Army, was captured carrying a letter written by Benedict Arnold explaining his plan to surrender the fort. He escaped to Canada, where he lived for several years before moving to London, England. Benedict Arnold died in London on June 14, 1801.
