  1. Seeking Sicilian Roots Part 2 The tour group rests in the morning and climbs Mount Pellegrino to see the shrine to Saint Rosalia The Lenas and Naumanns head south to their ancestral towns.

  2. Credits • Pictures by Joe Naumann

  3. Adventure in Family History • Castelvetrano • Campobello di Mazara • Mazara del Vallo • Selinute

  4. After Breakfast • We met Demitri, our driver who spoke no English. John Lena could speak more Italian than anyone else in the group of eight, so he was the official spokesperson – he did a commendable job. • It was a quick trip to Castelvetrano on the express highway. The express highway system in Sicily makes travel around the island quick and easy.

  5. Old train station

  6. Welcome to Castelvetrano

  7. Duomo of Castelvetrano

  8. Bell tower of the duomo and site associated with Garibaldi

  9. Another church

  13. Next stop: Campobello di Mazara Flowers and olive trees behind Joe.

  14. Towns of grandparent’s births

  15. Main street in front of St. John the Baptist Church Much smaller town than Castelvetrano or Mazara del Vallo

  16. St. John the Baptist Church

  17. Impressive for a small church

  18. Religious monument in park/plaza across from the church

  19. John Lena & the priest from St. John the Baptist. • The priest is an author of a book on the history of the town/church. • They found John & Vince’s grandmother’s baptismal record. • The priest knew about the Gateway Arch and St. Ambrose Parish.

  20. On to Mazara del Vallo

  21. Train Station

  22. Welcome to Mazara

  23. The Naumann family in the town where Joe’s grandfather was born The back of the duomo is at the end of the street.

  25. Interesting architecture

  26. We have a niece named Annalise Except for coffee bars and tobacco shops, all businesses were closed.

  28. Plaza-park across from duomo

  29. Shoreline piazza west of duomo

  33. Lunch • We stop looking for a restaurant that’s open. • We do find a coffee bar/pastry shop still open (they were about to close). • We have coffee, calzone, and cannoli for lunch – excellent all the way around. • We decide to stop at Selinute, near Castelvetrano on the way back to Mondello Bay

  34. Walking to the first temple This was the most nearly complete of the three temples at this site, and the smallest.

  35. The little one?

  36. How large were the larger ones?

  37. We could enter the temple – Wow!

  38. This is what is left of the larger neighboring temple

  39. A Fantastic Day • This was truly the highlight of the trip. • We couldn’t have shared it with a more congenial family than the Lenas. • We return to the Mondello Bay Palace for the best hotel meal so far (only one more to go). • Tomorrow, Jodi, Ginny’s roommate, will take a side trip to her ancestral hometown with our driver, Demitri.
