  9. Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communication The Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communication requires 12 credit hours (four courses). These 3 required: • COMM 5051 Advanced Strategic Communication  • COMM 5240 Organizational Communication • COMM 5939 Internship Plus (+) an elective at the graduate level from the College of Arts & Media, School of Business, the School of Public Affairs, or the Anschutz Medical Campus. The elective must be approved in consultation with the Department of Communication.

  12. Faculty Profile: Dr. Lisa Keränen 林麗莎 • Dr. Keranen is Chair of the Department of Communication at CU Denver and serves on five editorial boards in her area of expertise. She is past President of the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technolody (ARST) and is a past Director of the National Communication Association Forum (NCA-F). • Dr. Lisa Keränen studies and teaches rhetorical theory and criticism with an emphasis on the rhetoric of medicine, health care and bioethics. • She has received numerous awards for her research, teaching and service. Most recently, she received the 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award from the Western States Communication Association. Her book, Scientific Characters: Rhetoric, Politics, and Trust in Breast Cancer Research, received the 2011 Marie Hochmuth Nichols Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Public Address from the National Communication Association (NCA). Dr. Keranen's publications appear in journals such as Academic Medicine, Journal of Medical Humanities, Western Journal of Communication, and Quarterly Journal of Speech.

  13. Faculty Profile: Dr. Hamilton Bean Dr. Hamilton “豆豆” Bean teaches courses in strategic communication. As the Director of Graduate Studies, he also teaches the Introduction to Graduate Studies course. He has been an occasional visiting professor at ICB since 2011 and taught the Narratives of the New China travel study course multiple times. An advocate for cross-cultural understanding and collaboration, 豆豆 has published (with Dr. Patrick Dodge) “Reconfiguring Public Relations with China” in Public Relations Inquiry (2017). He is addicted to 麻辣香锅 and routinely sets off the smoke alarm in his house when making the dish for himself. He is excited to meet SZU students and develop new ways of exploring communication.

  14. Faculty Profile: Professor Sonja Foss Sonja K. Foss is a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado Denver. Her research and teaching interests are in contemporary rhetorical theory and criticism, feminist perspectives on communication, the incorporation of marginalized voices into rhetorical theory, and visual rhetoric. She is the author or coauthor of the books Gender Stories, Destination Dissertation, Rhetorical Criticism, Contemporary Perspectives on Rhetoric, Inviting Transformation, Feminist Rhetorical Theories, and Women Speak. Her essays in communication journals have dealt with topics such as paradigms of change, invitational rhetoric, agency in the film Run Lola Run, visual argumentation, and body art. Her work has been recognized by various awards, including the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Western States Communication Association, the Francine Merritt Award and the Douglas W. Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award from the National Communication Association, and the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Colorado Denver.

Faculty Profile: Professor Stephen Hartnett • Prof. Stephen Hartnett is a Professor in the Department of Communication and the 2017 President of the National Communication Association. • Hartnett is the author or editor of eight books and dozens of publications related to democracy, social justice, globalization and empire, and evolving rhetorical patterns between the U.S. and China. He is the recipient of numerous research awards, including the Winans and Wichelns Award for Distinguished Research in Public Address, the NCA’s Golden Monograph Award, the Karlyn Kohrs Campbell Prize in Rhetorical Criticism, and a PASS (Prevention for a Safer Society) Award from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. • Based on his research in China, Tibet, Nepal, India, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, he has been publishing articles on the U.S.-China relationship and, working with Patrick Dodge, has co-organized a series of conferences on these topics, which were hosted in Reno, Nevada, in 2013; in Washington, D.C. in 2014; in Anaheim, California, in 2014; and in Beijing in June 2015, 2016, and 2017. This work will culminate in 2017 with the publication of an edited book, Imagining China: Essays on Nationalism in the Age of Globalization.

Faculty Profile:Dr. Patrick 杜晓晖 Dodge • I am an Associate Professor CT with the Department and have served as the Associate Program Chair of our International College in Beijing (ICB) from 2011 – 2016. I am a member of the NCA’s Task Force to Foster International Collaborations in the Age of Globalization. • My research interests deal with U.S.-Chinese Intercultural Communication, China/Chinese Dream Discourse, and using communication to build cross-cultural alliances between China & the U.S. I am currently working on two projects: 1) authoring a book on China’s path to modernization and China Dream discourse, and 2) Editor of a book that threads together themes and future directions of media, convergence, and governance in the Age of Globalization. • I am part Chinese and part American. I have been living and teaching in Beijing since 2007. I love traveling, photography, and reading for fun.
