  1. CEABHow to Award Pharmacotherapeutic Credit CEAB Tips for Nurse Planners

  2. Who Can Provide Content ? • Physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Pharmacists, and others that prescribe medications are presenters that would clearly be speaking and possibly providing pharmacology content to members. • CEAB will review all applicants for pharmacotherapeutic content individually

  3. Why Is this Important ? • Beginning in 2015, advanced practice nurses will need to provide proof of continuing education through approved pharmacology content. • Advanced practice nurses include Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists and others that hold at least a Master’s degree in nursing

  4. Eligible Content • The next several slides will include the criteria that is used by ANCC for content to be considered eligible for awarding pharmacology content. • An example will be provided of that content on the next slide. • CEAB is providing this content to guide all nurse planners with the knowledge to add pharmacology to their meetings for their members.

  5. Eligible Content 1 • Overview of the disease or disease process for which the medication therapy is required. • This provides the background or the context for the appropriate medication therapies

  6. Example 1 • A speaker presents the background of the different types of diabetes, and the pathophysiology of the processes. • If medication therapy is included in the presentation, the background of the disease process and pathophysiology can be considered pharmacology content.

  7. Eligible Content 2 • Scientific rationale or evidence base of the use of medication therapy for a disease or disease process. • Includes the use of research or evidence based guidelines for determining appropriate medication use

  8. Example 2 • A speaker is presenting the recently published guidelines for the indications for the use of cholesterol lowering agents. • The guidelines will also count towards pharmacology content. • Medication therapy may be also provided in addition to the guidelines, however, the guidelines themselves can be awarded pharmacology content since medications are discussed.

  9. Eligible Content 3 • All content related to prescribing or recommending safe and appropriate use of medication therapy, including cost-effectiveness • How to dose and alter doses of a medication would be included

  10. Example 3 • If a speaker is discussing how to dose and or alter the doses of a medication, based upon a variety of factors –such as blood pressure, lab indices or other tests, this can be considered pharmacology content.

  11. Eligible Content 4 • All content related to the safe administration of medication therapy, including but not limited to dosage, route, frequency, delivery devices, administration devices • This would include methods of administration and variations based upon the method of administration

  12. Example 4 • If a presenter is discussing asthma and is including how to use a spacer for delivery of medication, the technique for use can also be considered pharmacology content.

  13. Eligible Content 5 • All content related to monitoring of medication therapy • Could include lab analysis, testing, vital signs

  14. Example 5 • If a speaker is discussing when to discontinue, hold or resume medications based upon laboratory analysis, vital signs or other assessment factors, this can also be considered pharmacology content

  15. Eligible Content 6 • All content related to side effects or adverse effects of medication therapy

  16. Example 6 • If a presenter is speaking about the adverse effects of chemotherapeutic agents, this would be considered pharmacology content

  17. Eligible Content 7 • All content related to special consideration of medication therapy • Specific age groups –such as the elderly or the pediatric client as well as the CKD individual

  18. Example 7 • If a presenter is discussing how to dose a medication or the safe and effective use of a medication in a special population of patients –such as the elderly or those with CKD, this can be considered pharmacology content.

  19. Eligible Content 8 • All content related to adjunctive therapy that may be used in conjunction with medication therapy

  20. Example 8 • If a speaker is discussing medication regimens for sports injuries and also includes a discussion on physical therapy and on heat and ice application, ultrasound in addition to the medication regimens, this can be considered pharmacology content.
