  1. CENTRO NACIONAL DE ASISITENCIA TÉCNICA EN ELEMENTO FINITO, S.C.

  2. M.C Humberto Peredo Reduction cost of magnetic material in refrigerator seals

  3. INDEX • Introduction • Antecedents • Fundamentals • Actual Process of Barium Ferrite • Improvement to actual process • Expected savings (Barium Ferrite)‏ • Implementation propose • Benefits • Conclusions • Appendices

  4. Introduction • Opportunity in refrigerators: improvement of the magnetic force reducing the material cost

  5. Introduction(cont.)‏ • Mexico is one of the principal raw magnetic material producer of BaCO3 & SrCO3 (Nuevo León y Coahuila)

  6. Antecedents • The magnetic Materials are relevant in many appliances (electric motors, microwave ovens, refrigerators, washers), automotive & aeronautic industry

  7. Antecedents (cont.)‏

  8. Antecedents(cont.)‏ • However the cost to produce strong field magnetic is too expensive (Sm o Nd)‏ Prices in Euros http://www.aimangz.com/web_programa/global/gtd_lista_subfamilia.php?familia=smco&subfamilia=barra

  9. Antecedents(cont.)‏ • Barium ferrite magnets are cheap, but the magnetic field is relatively weak. Prices in Euros http://www.aimangz.com/web_programa/global/gtd_lista_subfamilia.php?familia=smco&subfamilia=barra

  10. Fundaments • The origin of magnetism is due the electron spin B = μ(H + M) B = Magnetic Induction T Gauss H = Magnetic Field Am2 Oe M = Magnetic Saturation Am2 emu/cm3  = Material Permeability Henry/ m. *M o J = Intensity magnetization

  11. Fundamentos (cont.)‏ • The barium Ferrite has five sub lattices (12k,4f1,4f2,2a,2b ), and will contribute in the magnetic saturation according the next formula :

  12. Actual Process Barium Ferrite • Nowadays the Barium Ferrite is obtained by: • Ceramic • Co precipitation • SOL-GEL The highest Magnetic Saturation is about 0.475 T [Stäblein] Transforming process Raw Material Barium Ferrite

  13. Improvement in Actual process Barium Ferrite • Doing some changes to the actual barium ferrite process higher fields can be achieved (temperature, chemistry formula ) 0.69 T instead of 0.475 T Transforming process Raw Material Barium Ferrite B = μ(H (size grain) + M (ion substitution))

  14. Saving expected • Seal Material Cost 10 x 1,5 x 1000 mm = 0.49 € • A typical refrigerator of 22 ft3 requires 9 mts of Seal • Total Cost per unit = 4.41 €

  15. Implementation proposal • Patent • PYME • CONACYT • Implementation through actual production material supplier Registration patent Right properties Agreement Economical agreement Plant Implementation

  16. Benefits • Reduction of material costs. • Energy savings for the consumer • Reduction of seal material cost • Patent • State of the art technology

  17. Conclusions • According the results the magnetization saturation will increase by 47 %

  18. Appendices

  19. Characterization results • XRD

  20. Characterization results • Mössbauer Spectroscopy

  21. Characterization results • VSM
