  2. Teacher training has been a cornerstone of EKU since its beginnings. Model Laboratory School was established along side Eastern Kentucky State Normal School in 1906 Model’s mission was to acquaint college students with the methods of teaching and serve as a training school for prospective teachers. In 1922, Eastern Kentucky State Normal School became a 4-year institution and Teachers College. Model Laboratory School is the last remaining laboratory school in the Commonwealth. KRS 164.380 establishes laboratory or practice schools associated with colleges or universities providing practical experience for pre-service teachers In the US, Dewey furthered the mission of lab schools to research, experiment, and advance educational innovation Model Laboratory School At Eastern Kentucky University

  3. Model Lab School is an integral part of EKU, providing practical experiences for EKU students across programs and majors. College of Education Observation, Practicum, and Student Teaching for Pre-service K-12 teachers Clinical Experience for speech pathology students College of Nursing Practical and applied experiences for community safety Clinical and lab experiences for OT majors Psychology Clinical assessment as testing experience for prospective school psychologists. Dual Credit Opportunities for Model Lab High School Students Model Lab student can experience the complete catalog of courses on EKU campus with EKU faculty.   5. Sustaining the Commonwealth’s last remaining laboratory school is currently possible only through multiple funding sources. Tuition and Fees $2.7M Disbursements from MadisonCounty Public Schools, includes partial SEEK* $2.363M EKU, E&G, corresponds to amandate conferred by CPE $2M____ Total ** $7.06M *Based on a 1990 agreement, Madison Co Schools caps Model Enrollment at 791 students and provides EKU with the SEEK portion of Model’s ADA minus local effort, capital outlay, and administration fees equal 12.7% of the SEEK amount plus $5000. ** Does not include prior, historic capital and facility-related expenditures for the Donovan complex that houses the Model Lab School; these expenditures represent another portion of EKU mandate-support.   6. The EKU Board of Regents sets tuition and fees for Model Laboratory students.* *Model enrolls students on a first-come, first-serve basis based on date of application. The 2018-19 enrollment is 695. Approximately 10% of the enrollment receive special education services. Approximately 40% of students have parents who are faculty or staff at EKU. The now 56 year-old Donovan Building housing Model Lab School is beyond repair and in need of replacement. • Health, Safety, and ADA Accessibility are compromised by outdated, nonfunctioning, and antiquated systems, infrastructure, and architecture. • Design and configuration of classroom space is not conducive to implementing or modeling modern pedagogies and technologies. • Size and capacity does not allow for growth and expansion. EKU and Model Lab remain committed to their initial 1906 mission - leading and advancing educational excellence and opportunity in the Commonwealth. • In a shared commitment with Eastern Kentucky University, Model Laboratory School will serve as the learning laboratory for P-12 education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky by providing an exemplar for research, best practices, and innovation in elementary and secondary education and teacher professional learning. • Creation of a Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation to provide career-long professional learning, development, and growth, including opportunities for alternative endorsements and Rank changes. • Provide leadership in the advancement of educational charters through the establishment of a charter network.
